Advice Before Removing Coating on Becker Crewman

I know a few people here have removed the coating from their Beckers but before I do it I was wondering how good or bad the blade was underneath. The reason that I ask is that I removed the coating from my CS Recon Tanto and the grind marks are so bad that I haven't been able to remove them by hand and don't have the equipment to do it. If this is the case with the Becker's, I figure that I'm better off leaving the black coating.

I have removed the coating on a Crewman and a Bowie and they were smooth underneath. Some other knives I have removed the coating on were not. I think you are safe with the Beckers though.

And post pics! I feel you though. I haven't gotten the nerve up to strip my Howling Rat.:o

Of course every time I look at one of tknife's posts I starting considering it again. That patina is real nice on that knife.

I went ahead and took the plunge. The Becker was nothing like the Cold Steel knife. The blade was smooth. The spine and edges were a little rough but that doesn't bother me. The top part of the blade after the bevel looks a little like the knives that have been shown that were made out of the Old Hickory blades. I think that I am going to polish the blade and leave the top part as is. Although the grey coloring is not bad. I took some in progress pictures which I will post when I upgrade my membership. I kind of like the handles but I still think that my next step is to make some out of wood. I like the knife so much better now. You wouldn't think the coating would make that much difference.

Ps. Does the gold membership allow you to post pics?

What did you use to strip it ?

Why do you need to upgrade your membership to post pics ?

Me too, I'm not a fan of the thick coatings. the slice much better now for sure.

I used something called Sprayon Heavy Duty Paint Remover. I let it sit about 20 minutes and it scraps right off.

I thought upgrading your membership was the easiest way to post pics. What other ways can you post pics. I have quite a few pictures that I would like to contribute but have never tried to post a picture.

you dont have to upgrade anything to post pics. upload them to photobucket then copy and paste the bottom link here and you pictures shal be posted lol
