Good advice. I will try it with a rougher, non-glazed - pointier point and I will avoid those nasty conifers.

Seems to me I've heard of some of the local tribes (Apache, Pima) using the "wood" from a dried agave or sotol flower-stalk for their fireboards. That stuff is almost as soft as it gets.
