hey everyone

i have a friend who i want to give a nice spring assist knife to for his Eagle Scout but since i am a college student i dont have a whole lot of money. i have a sog twitch 2 that is great but that is a little above the price range i am aiming for (40 is the highest i really can afford and if i cant find a good one i may fall back to just a folder or fixed blade or something else all together but i just want something nice that he can use a lot).

i know a lot of people like the leeks but one of the things i notice about some of the kershaws and some of the spydercos is that the thumb stud is pretty far back making it a little hard to kick the blade out so that is something i am keeping in my thoughts. so what does everyone like that is in the lower price range? is this basically asking to get gas at 2 bucks a gallon now or not?

thanks

Now that Camillus has passed, getting an assisted for $40 will probably mean crappy construction of everything else. I'd just get a regular folder for the money.

i am just partial to them plus the fact that he doesnt have one but does like them. personally i find them more useful in most of the situations i am at least in.

ya i am kinda thinking i may be asking for something a little to cheap but i wanted to ask around first

You don't need to use the thumbstuds on the Leek as it also has a flipper. The thumbstuds are used as stop pins. Being able to open the knife with them is just a bonus.

ok thanks for that info, i was not sure of that, couldnt remember off hand.

im guessing my 40 dollar range is kinda not gona work to well, hmm let me change it to 60-70 ish range and see what others say. i can probably get some one to go in with me.

thanks

Leek , Scallion , Chive.

All somewhat near $40 and very worthy.

+1 for all these Kershaws. You can't go wrong with any of them for the price and they all are assisted opening.

There's also the SOG Blink. Its pretty small (VERY sheeple friendly IME) but sharp and disappears wherever you put it.

Oh good call. When it comes to affordable AO knives I always think of Kershaw first. SOG also has the Twitch knives that are AO. The XL is a little over the $40 price limit but the Twitch II can be had for much less...$20 or so. Lowes has the Twitch II. There is also the SOG Flash II which also comes in under the price limit. Lowes carries the Flash II as well.

ok so basicaly as long as i stick with the sog and kershaw brands i pretty much cant go wrong?

i think im gona look at getting him a leek and maybe get it engraved. the sheeple thing isnt that big of an issue, being a boyscout and being in VA he shouldnt have any issues (i never really did).

hmmm from looking around i may have to buy my self a leek i found, why must this stuff be so addicting

matt...$ 40? Kershaw Scallion or Leek from wally world. $ 60 to $ 70ish range and you've opened up a whole different can o worms...Cyclone, Shallot, Mini Mojo/Mojito (he'll like this one best, I guarantee it!), Speed Bump, Blur...the list goes on and on.

Take a browse thru www.newgraham.com, select the Kershaw stuff and look at all the options you have at the higher price range...

Plus all these knives have a flipper as well as a thum stud. I like the scallion best. Go handle one at wal mart. They are small ( size between a Chive and a Leek) but sharp!

Oh also, the Needs Work is a great knife too. It grows on you.

The Leek is a great knife. It can almost pass for a gentleman's knife, but it is strong enough to do real work, and has a sharp point for details. The SOG Flash II is also a good choice, perhaps for heavier work. I can recommend both from happy experience.

That's a very uneducated answer -

-The Kershaw line up would be a great way to go, leek, scallion, chive, baby boa, and i am pretty sure you wont have to worry about "crappy construction".:p;)

from browsing through what one store i have ordered from before has i found an all black leek (teflon coating for the black) which i thought i might get (but then i thought about him dropping it by accident at night so i might go with a more plain steel).

alright it looks like im going to stick to the kershaws and probably the leeks for him. im not to sure how he would respond to the others ones but some of the other ones just seem to be shaped strange to me.

thanks guy ill let yall know exactly which one i get him and how he likes it
