Shop market place and private sales. If your patient and understand what to look for you'll be able to get awsome deals. Yes it's great to buy brand new and support stores but buying off someone private might help them financially and save you alot of money! Just be smart about the transaction look for reputable sellers

As far as what knife to buy don't overthink it as long as it's a well known brand and the model in your opinion has a appealing look. Blade steels, design and handle materials will obviously be "Better" the more you spend just do research once you find something you like

Thank you all for the advise!

He already has a good multi tool, I feel like that's the wrong move. Plus I want him to build up a collection of folders over the years. I think it would be flippin' great if he's scratching his head wondering which one he wants to edc that day. This one Chris got me? Or this one Chris got me? He can keep the multitool realm separate.

I think a flipper tab knife is totally up his alley.

Spyderco makes a fine knife, I just honestly am not familiar enough with their lineup so thank you for those suggestions! I kinda like the sage 5 leaf shape blade compression lock. It reminds me of a smaller shaman. I with it came in something other than FRN. And while I want to hate on the wire clip, I almost prefer it to a stamped one.

Those other couple brands and models I'll check out too.

On the warncliff blade shape year I hear ya! I was looking at the Kizer mini critical flipper for that reason but geez I just want this first gift knife to have a good milled clip too and the mini critical does not.

Thanks again for all the input! The search continues.
My personal recommendations from Spyderco!

Endura 4 or Delica 4
Paramilitary 2 or Para 3
Native 5

Any of those would be a fine choice for a gift, while staying well within 200 bucks. I would not overthink the steel choice. Anything from VG10 to S30V will serve your loved one well.

I personally would want to know more about hobbies and area he lives in before throwing out suggestions. If he is into hiking or has plans for using it fishing, etc. Also would be helpful to know where he will be carrying it in order to make sure it is a legal length if that is a concern. Knives that one person likes can be disliked by others, and there are so many great ones available. Blade shapes, finishes, scale choices, action and lock type…. So many choices! When I started dating my wife, I took her to a great knife shop and let her pick one she liked (therefore would carry). Personalizing one is an option for many knives if you aren’t concerned about resale. I think it is great you want to do this and the fact that he can pass on quality knives is a bonus.
