Advice for an aspiring knife maker

What sort of tools would I ndeed to do finish work on a blade? I.E. Making handle look smooth and shiny as well as blade looking shiny?
 
thanks, do i need a machine or can it be done by hand when just starting out?
 
Drill, hacksaw, files, and sandpaper. This is all you need to make a knife (assuming someone else does the heat treat). Machines just speed up the process.

You can get a cheap grinder for buffing and a small drill press cheap at pawn shops or garage sales.1x30 grinders are available cheap 2nd hand also.
