Advice for choice of round

I will be bringing both, just in case. I might also bring my marlin 45-70(although that might be a bit much for white tails)

On second thought take the Marlin and leave the other 2 at home. Most Marlins will handle modern ammo. I don't even know if there's any that won't (45-70). You'll get about 1800 fps out of a 300 grain JHP. It's a good 200 yard cartridge for deer if you are good at estimating your distance and remembering your bullet drop.

When it comes to guns I like something with a lot of stopping power. You never really know what animal you're going to run into. I've been out hunting deer and ran into boar. At the time I only had a .25 Winchester I had borrowed from a friend (I joined the trip short notice....long story). I didn't feel like it was safe to engage with such a small caliber gun.

To this day I don't carry anything with less power then my .30-06 Springfield.

Take your Marlin 45-70. Mine loves the Hornady LeveRevolution ammo. I have taken 3 deer with mine, and it did a fine job.

If your have a detachable magazine, be sure to know the state laws. Many states limit you to 5 rounds for hunting.

For a whitetail, a .30 caliber round is fine.

For a muley, you may be a little light, especially for a long shot.

Try to get a 130 grain bullet or larger, if you can.
