Advice for my pathetic collection

Recurves have a slightly steeper learning curve, maybe, but once learned, are not harder to sharpen, and only take slightly more time, in my experience.

Etna - My CH0030 was also discontinued. I found out when I tried to get one for my brother as a gift :(

Go Google for the S&W CK402 and/or the CK117. They seem to carry a few aspects of the CH0030's design in them, especially the CK402. The blade shape is entirely different though.

Good on you Springy!

Jupiter, he is a good guy and we are glad to have him amongst the ranks of the regulars in the Becker Subforum.
Once you start looking at some fixed blades, you have Mora, Condor, Becker and Esee as ones often sought first.
My choice (if it is worth anything to you) is Becker.

Take a swing by the Becker Sub and say hello. The Snark thread in the stickied threads I'd a nice place to hang out and BS with some friendly folks.

Hey Jupiter. My names Springy. I want you to email me your address. I've got something for you. But firstly, I just want to say whatever your budget, the fact you love knives is awesome. Don't think your collection is pathetic. I don't. Circumstances can be great or they can suck. And they can lie anywhere in between. You've made the most out of what you can afford and that garners respect from me..

Now, recently I was done right by someone in a manner that I was not expecting and it truly humbled me. And the only thing they asked was for me to pay it forward. I want to pay it forward. I want to give you my Spyderco Endura in VG10 and my Becker BK14 which is made of 1095cv. Below is a picture:

They have both been used but only for basic carving of some sticks and $#!+ when I have been camping. The Endura has a stock edge and has zero play in the pivot and the Becker has a hand ground convex and whilst not shaving sharp it is still very usable. I've put an Aboriginal styled motif in a patina made from Japanese mayonnaise (believe it or not) and attached some 550 as a small lanyard. There is a very small amount of minor surface rust but I will attempt to get rid of this and properly convex the edge before I send it to you. The 14 will also have the sheath with it. I just need your address. I'll cover the postage from Australia to Ohio and any other stuff that goes with it. My email address is:

spoonman319@gmail.com

Don't sell any of your collection. Keep them. They're your knives. Not anyone else's. And so will these be.

All the best brother. Look forward to hearing from you..

Springy..

Very generous Springy, kudos to you. That will be all he needs for a while, give him some time to save up for another.

onojoe -Yes very generous indeed. I assume you are correct that those will cover my needs for the foreseeable future. It would have taken a long time before I could purchase such things!

NJBillK - I will definitely drop by and say hi. Most here have been very helpful indeed. Also had a Mora on my short list, being super affordable and my experience shows the Scandi steel to be no joke!

Dear Springy,
I have no words to express what you just did for this man, except to say that you are a better man for it. Thanks for sharing this random act of kindness where I just happen to stumble across while searching for expensive knife brands. May it be returned to you tenfold one day when you need it most.
Felix

Hey fellas. Thanks for the kind words but honestly, I just wanna help a brother out. I love those two knives but I know Jupiter will look after them and enjoy them and use them as the tools they are. I love this community and the people in it and wanted to give back, even in small way and, as mentioned, pay forward a biggie that was shown to me at random. Thanks for emailing me Jupiter, I'll get these out to you as soon as possible mate..

Definitely my pleasure friend! Definitely one of the warmest welcomes I've ever had. I can't wait to get more proper experience under my belt so that I can be on the contributing side. For now, I learn :)

I love these forums. Amazing people here. Jupiter...since you now will have some high quality knives that will serve you well for many years to come, you owe it to yourself to learn how to sharpen them! As a fellow sharpening n00b, I highly recommend spending $50 and getting a spyderco sharpmaker. You have a bunch of knives to practice on and will soon feel comfortable sharpening the higher quality knives. It is a great product with almost no learning curve and there are plenty of people here who can help you if you have questions. Best of luck!!!!

I want to pay it forward. I want to give you my Spyderco Endura in VG10 and my Becker BK14 which is made of 1095cv. Below is a picture:

Springy..

That's an awesome thing to do!
Very generous Springy, you make the world a little brighter.

Class Act Springy. That's awesome.

I got some pics this evening. Sorry if the resolution is not the greatest I have a Moto G 1st gen phone and don't feel the need to upgrade :)

The recent Ebay silliness

My abused first knives (Victorinox Gardener & Monarch 2101) + Mini-Buck & Victorinox SD

Closer shot of my messed up Gardener blade

The Kabar (that broke my heart) and my S&W

The SRM 710 & Schrade X-Timer XTB

And just for fun, the top 13 inches of a $10 Pakistan 440 sword blade I'm going to turn into a knife, and a $1.29 Karambit Ring - no idea why I got that...

Finished mostly freehand with a Dremel and files. Did a quick grind on a bench grinder and hit with a belt sander but the belt needed replaced. HRC 43.5 so it's basically a test run.
