Advice for new high end ish fixed blade

I do own a AK from HI, I'm not intending to beat on this knife or use it for hard work, it'll be more of a collector's item that can whoop some zombie ass when the time comes :)

I really like the design on the hurricane, so that's a big selling point.

Only issue is there don't seem to be lot of actual use/abuse reviews on kiku knives, are they as tough as they come?

Thanks alot!

Does it matter if it's actually tough, give that it will be a collector's item that won't see hard use or abuse? If you like it, that seems like enough--performance doesn't matter in a collector's item, does it?

True, but I do feel more comfortable owning a knife that can perform with the best when time comes to put it to use.

Many good one's out there, but if toughness is your top priority, I would go with a Busse.

Checked out Busse, didn't see any designs that jumped out as much as the hurricane. Wanted something more exotic.

Let me tell you that if you buy that KIKUO HURRICANE you are talking about... your hand will be too sore to put the knife to its paces. Have you imagined what it could be to do any kind of hard work while holding that handle? It narrows at the end of it, so your hand will slip if you were to hold it there for chopping (to gain more leverage). And the general shape of the knife does not seem to put the weight forward, so chopping is out of the question. Also you stated quite a few times that you want a boombproof knife but you are thinking about buying a knife with such a pointy tip that there is no need to be an engineer to see that you won't be able to do any prying. The handle is not going to be comfortable by any means, it is not neutral at all (only one way to hold onto that handle). And last but not least, ¿have you thought about sharpening that knife?

Seriously. When all of us read your first post, we all thought you were talking about a big Busse or a similar sized/shaped knife from another makers with fancy metals. Of course with a truly determination to use it... and use it hard. But now, after the KIKOU HURRICANE suggestion... y just seems you are looking for an expensive fantasy knife. A tryly expensive fantasy knife btw... $700 (including shipping) could buy you a lot of Busse.

But, each to his own. It is your money.

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to make an addition to my small collection of knives. Currently looking for a mid to large sized fixed blade with emphasis on toughness, sharpness and durability. Basically a tank of a knife that will stand up to pretty much anything.

Here's a few points in particular:

Steel - would prefer stuff like S30V, 150CM or VG10, something premium

Aesthetically pleasing - could be tactical or just anything that doesn't look like an eye sore

Budget - prefer to stay within $400 USD range, could be increased, depends on the knife

Weight is not an issue.

Hope you guys can give me some recommendations, thanks!

Regards
Marki

For that money you could get into a Custom made to your specs in almost any steel you would want.

Check out the Custom makers forum here on BF.

Go for a RMD Rodent 9, it's 52100, big, heavy, affordable. If you break it, you did something wrong. You can't cut anything with it other than chop frozen fish in half though. Here you go! 200$, all you ever need!

I'm lusting after a Scrapyard 911. $170 for the knife, ~$50 for some good kydex. Basically, there are many, many Bussekin knives that are well-suited based on your requirements.

I would look at a Legion SC from knife research. I have one and it is a nice heavy tough knife.

Makes alot of sense Mike, am reconsidering that hurricane.

Any suggestion on a customer maker who's happy to work with a big knife with exotic blade design?

I am glad you are reconsidering that Hurricane.

Regarding your question about a customer (I bet you meant MAKER) who could slap together a big knife with a design of your own... mmm. I can't give you many suggestions since all I own is production. I would suggest browsing the Knifemakers subforum and send a few pm's. But before you send any kind of message... try to have a rough sketch of what you would like to have made and what materials you would like to see involved. Big knife with exotic blade design is somewhat of a broad question... impossible to have a guestimate of costs and time schedule.

Good luck and whatever you do, let us know!

As you've probably worked out from the suggestions, steer clear of stainless for hard use ( zombie protection), unless it's laminated like Fallkniven for eg.

Take a look at fehrman knives, the first strike sounds like it would work for you.

+1. But their knives are not stainless.

Busse/Swamp Rat... INFI is the best you can get, and 400 will get you a nice big slab of INFI

This one is under 400 as configured
