Hi everybody, I'm new to this forum but I've been reading it for a while, and have to say I find it really interesting and useful...so this is my first "new thread" and I hope u can give me some good advice.
I'm currently looking for a small EDC knife, less than 3'' blade, maybe even less than 2,5''. I do carry my SAK so what I need is a short but reatively thick blade (locked) to spare my Vic Spartan from some tasks.
My first idea was the Boker SubCom or Wharcom...still I'm not convinced. Found a couple of nice Italian knives (like the Maserin Turtle and Dolphin) but they are a bit on the refined, expensive side, so I'm looking for alternatives and I'm sure u will help me.
Thanks

Hello there.

I have the Subcom, and I am reasonably pleased with it. I have lately been using knives with straighter edges, as I think the edge on the SubCom have too much belly for every day chores. My opinion:-) If you are looking at Bøker, I can recommend the Trance. 2-3/4 inch blade and very easy to carry. I usualy remove the clips from my knives and carry them in my front pocket. Carrying it this way the Trance sits unnoticed in my pocket. Maybe not the "toughest" of knives, but more than good enough for me.

Izula 1 or 2 are great. Swamp Rat has a small knife called the Rodent Solution which is available.

Thanks for the replies...adding some hints. I need a folder (not a fixed blade...I had forgot to say this).
Would u recommend the Izula folder too? Any more? I was looking at the Spyderco Ambitious too but I have no idea of how much it can cost here...
I liked the SubCom when I first saw it actually, altho I do agree the blade is a bit too curved, so that's why I thought of the Wharcom too.
Oh and one more thing...3'' is actually longer than what I'm looking for. Blade has to be less than 2,5''.
Thanks again :-)

I do like the Dragonfly...but I hoped to find something cheaper. After all, I'm not going to handle this knife too much, and the cheaper I saw the Dragonfly here in Italy is at least 50 euros plus shipping. I want to save my money for other knives....
Opinions about the Ambitious?

how about the kershaw chive or scallion. you can purchase them from the kershawguy's blem list.

bit on the cheap side, but nonetheless great knives, also not hard for you to find in italy, are the higonokami knife and the small french douk douk
if you like the sak you carry, you can look for an alox soldier, pioneer or a farmer, they have thicker blades are are a lot more strong than their plastic handled brothers.
other than that, I too recommend a spyderco delica, one of the greatest small edc folding knives ever made.

sorry, i've seen to late that you wanted a recommendation for a locking blade, and all above are not locking, except of course, the delica.

Some suggestions. The Leatherman Crater C33, can be bought for about 20 to 25 euros and has a blade of 6.6 cm. The Gerber LST has a blade of 6.7 cm and the price is around 30 euros.

Edit: the Victorinox alox Solo could also be interesting if you only want an extra blade, but it's not locking.

Crkt drifter stainless steel framelock. Blade is around 2.7 inches. Also pretty thick for its size. Costs around $20 not sure what that is in euros.

In terms of smaller-size top-shelf EDC folders, Spyderco is pretty much the best, IMHO. Given your criteria, I strongly recommend the Dragonfly2. You'll put out more for it in the short-term, but it'll last forever if you take care of it. The Ambitious is a bit heavier overall, and the blade steel (8Cr13MoV) won't hold its edge as well as the Dragonfly2 (VG-10), but for light-duty use it should be awesome (assuming you have a good sharpener).

I forget where I read this, but you'll remember how good of a knife it is long after you forget how much you paid. Just a thought.

How about a Spyderco Ambitious or if you want smaller a Spyderco LadyBug? Also the Boker Hyper is real nice for the money. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Thanks for ur help and opinions guys :-)
Few feedbacks....
I do own an alox "solo" SAK (don't remember if it's the Pioneer or Cadet, I got it recently...it's good to have friends who work at security checkpoints in airports) but it doesn't lock, and I am in search for a shorter blade (the SAK is 9cm).
The Leatherman G33 kinda suits my general idea; about Spyderco, I like the Ambitious, and even more I like the Dragonfly, but, honestly, it's above my actual price cap (which should be less than 40 euros), and unfortunately I later realized that, for some reason (and I guess it's not just for the cost of shipping), the same knife will cost way more here than in the USA. I am saving money to get a handmade custom Pattada slipjoint (can't ignore my blade roots) so the budget on this is low, and eventually I could decide not to take anything....and go on with my current EDC's (a SAK Spartan and a RAT 1, even if the Ontario isa bit big and heavy for that), but I know I will find a good pick with ur help.
Today I saw the Boker Wharcom and SubCom again...but I have thoughts on the steel (a friend of mine has a SubClaw and isn't that happy about it, he says it doesn't really keep an edge for long) and it isn't that cheap too.
I keep thinking...and hope u keep telling me ur opinions
:-)

I purchased the Spyderco Ambitious last week and have been carrying it daily. I very much like the Ambitious. However, I might as well be carrying a larger knife when considering the size and weight. My small "go to" knife is a SOG Flash 1. Very small and light weight. Also has a great pocket clip that allows the knife to pretty much disappear in your pocket.
