I got a NIB Case Swayback Gent recently on the exchange. It is a super cool little knife, but very gritty and hard to open. What can I do to improve it?

I use an old toothbrush and scrub it with soap and water. Open and close it while I rinse it off. Dry and oil it. That normally does it but if not just rinse and repeat.

Yep. A bath in hot soapy water, using dish soap like Dawn/Ivory/etc., while exercising the pivot in the soapy water, usually does the trick. Rinse in hot water (exercising the joints again), dry everything out, and a little WD-40 in the joints will flush out any residual moisture. Case is known to ship knives with leftover buffing compound (most likely) in the joints. It may take a couple or three baths like this to clear it all out, but it should get it done.
