advice for tiny knife

gotcha, What do you think of that little russell, it sounds perfect to me.
AG Russell's Ultimate Pen Knife is great for what it is. a super-tiny slip-joint that can slice surprisingly well for its size. if you get it, make sure you get the version with the bale.

i got one for my father on his birthday, and it was hard to give it up. since he's had it i've seen him use it mostly to open beef jerky and pistachios. but i've seen him take it to extreme use and slice leather and even a can to boil water in.

i personally wouldn't go with it for your use, due to it being a super-small slip-joint (i would probly go with the Cricket. it's a fantastic cutter with a strong lock. i currently have one on my keychain), but to me it sounds like that's the part that appeals to you. it's a great little knife! :D

Sounds like you're getting good advice so far, but I thought I'd throw another idea out. Since it sounds like this blade will be a backup to a backup, and will probably see very little use, you may want to consider a small blade with a short tang and no handle. This way you could just quickly improvise your own handle with a decent sized stick or branch, and secure it with cordage, sinew, hide glue, string, or whatever. (or if it's a rat tail tang, you could even just shove it down the pith in the center of the stick) The blade would be no bigger than what you can already get with the folder, but as others mentioned, a decent sized handle is more important.

the possum Your suggestion opens up a whole new way of thinking not just about the knife but everything I need in the kit which is very little. I'm still going to buy one those little russells for study, But I'm going to work on your idea and the way of thinking it represents.

So this is the kit that you crack open when you've fallen down the waterfall and broke/lost your other knife/knives?

In that case, I think it's worth considering a fixed blade again.

1oz.

Can actually do some serious cutting

Stronger than any folder (OK, OK, I know there's probably a strider out there that could boast more lateral strength, but not at anything approaching that weight)

Really, check out the site.

Spyderco has plenty of selections that I am sure you will see something u like there. My personal preference in this case, would be the Victorinox Soldier. Robust, value and compact.
