Advice from BUSSE owners please. (Dumb question from a newbie)

3 is good. I have always gone by it. A chopper/machete (AK :D ), mid-sized like NO-E, and small like a warden. Does all I need and more. Actually the large and small would be fine.

Tyrkon,

I thought about two. Really I did.

Then I started thinking 4 was a better number.. ( 3 knives to use, and then one for around the fire , you know just to look good, like them schmancy 1911's the good old boys in Texas wear to the Barbeque.

And really that was not being selfish. It's more of a "fit in with the Joneseys" gesture.

But then in the back of my mind, I started hearing voices, you know like...
little whispers....HHSH....NMSFO...CGBWM....AK...4..7...Dang it was like some sort of hostile morse code station banging away inside my head.

Man, it was turrible. I was losing sleep. Kicking the dog. Drinking out of the milk carton. All sorts of awful habits started popping up.

I convinced myself I needed no less than 37 BUSSE knives.

No kidding. I was a mess.

I went to see a hypnotist. You know like the ones what help people to quit smoking. SO I went in and had a session. Only I am not sure if it worked cause I don't remember much and I got this overwhelming urge top chew sugarless gum and tap my foot.

Anyhow, that is when I wrote down my theory of "3".

Just remember, admitting you have a problem is the first step towards ...something...that's the part I can't remember so good.

I WILL say this ONE TIME and one time ONLY!

I am only here to buy 3 KNIVES! That's it. 3 and I am out.

Only 3.

Yup 3 is the number and the number is 3.

The holy trinity as it were.

A big one, a medium one, and a little one. THREE.

I put my foot down and counted to three.

Shane
Yup three is fine.
3 in the safe with 3 behind it and 3 on either side of it.
Three in the kitchen, 3 in the shop with 3 at the custom shop and 3 in the BOB bag.
Good luck with three!!! :)

Jaxx, I seriously appreciate all the pics.

And I apologize if this topic is OLD HACK. Dang I remember on BF when I used to be in the MAKERS section a lot. There was always guys coming in asking...

How do I make a knife?

You could hear the sound of ten thousand forehead slaps ringing in your ears.

And I am listening.

...snip...

Shane

Sorry, man! ...Long day and I'm beat. We get these Q's a lot, but hey... We all were new to Busse knives once, and almost all of us are guilty of the same or similar question(s), so no worries! ;) Easier for me tonight to copy & paste than try to type...I type slowly. Figured that if you saw something in them you liked, you could post a Q and get responses. :D Lazy way out! :o

Good Hunting!!

:)

Hey steelnut... resize your pic, man, it's running off the screen! :p

Steelnut, could you please resize that pic in Post #2 down to 1000-1200 pixels wide or whatever size doesn't break the tables, please? I wouls really appreciate it. TIA!

I would say the Sar 6 and SFNOs are both good choices, but if you want a beefier/bigger medium knife I will say SFNO all the way! can't go wrong with that!!

Hey no worries. There is the "want" list, the "need" list and the "NEEEEEED" list. :p

I just limit myself to 3 and all users. But that's what works for me. Everyone's different.:thumbup:

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

you can't just have three. Even in the little-medium-big, you have to at least have 2 big, one for winter and one for summer.

I would suggest:

small - cabs
medium - choiless boss jack or desert storm fighter
large summer - nmfbm/ttkz (possibly with a thinned out edge)
large winter - b11

The basic series always worried me in the 'bomb proof' catagory, because if my dog got ahold of it the handles would be in shambles. Likewise, if for some reason they did fail, I'd have a hard time fixing damaged rubber. But.... that basic 11... it's perfect Shane. If I had to cut down to two knives only I'd have the basic 11 and a choiless boss jack proto. Everything else is cool, but not perfect like those two knives.

(I have not handled the dsf, I just take preference to choiless anything)

Aww Dang!

Canary...you got me.

NO way 3 will be enough. Even if you consider there are 4 seasons. There's four knives right there.

I saw one of those white Battle Mistresses, and I went sort of GAGA....thinking how cool that would be when I go snowshoeing...and handy too in the deep woods in Winter...

I AM GONNA HAFTA MAKE A DANG LIST so I can explain to the wife why we need a second mortgage.

Will Mr. BUSSE take in small children as down payment? Mine are healthy with most of their teeth. Mostly house broke. Should be worth about 1 knife each.

That'd get me started anyhow.

Dang!

For the three to the left, your in about 1,000$. For the cabs, boss jack and custom shopped kz2, it would be around 1,300. for all four, around around 1,600-1,700, depending on what kinds of prices you could find.

The dsf would do a slightly better job of bridging the length difference between the cabs and the kz2, but it's less every day carriable. The choiless boss jack is heavy for it's size and is actually a competent chopper with enough reach to process most firewood. If you intend to actually edc it for those chances that you do process wood at someone elses house, the boss jack is the better choice. for camp-only, the dsf would probably be more versatile.

If money is an issue, the b11 is a perfect knife. Not as 'bomb proof' as a nmfbm or kz, but amazing for the money, and an extremely proficient chopper thanks to it's hidden full tang and lack of micarta/g10.

First of all, good luck with sticking to 3.. I know it makes sense, but if you are into knifes and are holding your first Busse it will be very difficult to resist.. I wanted to go with 2 only and got myself a FBM and a SFNO LE. Which were shortly followed by a SAR 3 SE and a SAR 6.. The bug got me.. can't resist..

Anyhow, to your question. As many have quoted already a SFNO or SAR 6 would fit the bill nicely. I have both and like both. If I would have to choose I would go for the SFNO, just because I like it better.. not because it is better.. I mainly like the looks better and the handle is a bit thicker and fits me perfectly. But I would say the SAR 6 is as capable in everything, the blade length is almost identical. In my eyes, it is a more elegant knife and hence not so impressive as my SFNO LE, but we are talking aesthetics here and not usability.. I like the SAR 6 a lot too..
As others have stated already, a big plus at the moment for the SAR 6 is its availability from the Company Store where you can also get a kydex or leather sheath. Surely very convenient and at a fair price.
You can't go wrong with both.

For your large knife, I personally think a FBM is more than enough for anything one can throw at it. I don't really see the advantage of the FFBM. The FBM is a very versatile knife, does chopping very well but can also be used as a camp knife for many chores.. you can even prepare food with it. I have a sabre ground, satin version and love it! That's my SHTF knife.

Whatever you choose, enjoy your Busse knifes and beat them!

Welcome back!

I swear, we do this "what is the best medium size knife?" about every other week lately.

The good news for you is that there is a surfeit of choices.

The bad news for you is that there is a surfeit of choices.

We have had any number of folk come in the Bussekin universe, and find out that to get "The One" they had to buy (or trade for) a knife, get it in hand, decide it wasn't "The One", sell it (or trade away). Rinse and repeat. These are personal choices. It is hard for us to know what will fit your hand, or feel good to you. For example, many people love the ASH-1. Except me; I don't like that handle on that knife. YMMV.

The best advice is to try and find a fellow piglet with a few knives that you can at least get a chance to hold. Let us know were you live, you might get lucky.

After reading this its, Yeah what he said. One of the reasons I have owned so many different versions is because I have been searching for "the one". Of course the one in each size range is more realistic. 3 won't happen unless you are extremely disciplined (which I am obviously not in this area). If you can hook up with other Busse nuts, go to Blade, etc: and handle some of them it very well may save you a bundle of cash. On the other hand but they do retain their value very well, we have a great place to "exchange" them here without losing too much money in the quest and its a lot of fun to get a new one in the mail and evaluate it for your feel and particular tasks. Good luck!

Well fellas,

I may be changing up on my choices.

I may go with the SFNO as the MEDIUM...and go with the HG55 as my "small knife".

My hands have filled up with arthritis the last couple of years. I drop small stuff a lot.

Thinking the HG55 would be easier to keep a hold of than a MUK.

No worries though. Our household will still need 3 or 4 MUKS.

And as far as I can tell, re-selling BUSSE knives isn't too difficult.

LOL.

What do you think about my CHANGE?

Shane

Get the B-11, SNFO and what ever small blade that catches your eye. Res-c handles are great in cold weather and easier to hold as you loose grip strength (imo).

Once last thing.

I was going to let this thread die, but a last question presented itself.

Would a "BATTLE PAPPY" be a terrible choice for a BUSSE knife?

I really dig it.

Well?

Shane

A battle pappy would be an awesome choice. I have not held one, but I guarantee you would like it.

Forward weight for chopping. sweet classic bowie profile? Convex edge? Whats not to like?

I would get on in a heart beat if I had the cash.

I will just have to be satisfied with my KZII, B11, SarSquatch, Cabs and Bony AD. For now.

Of course I did try (and miserably failed) to score a scrapyard in the Ganza last night.

If your going to "walk about", I suggest a Choil-less Anorexic Boss Street (C.A.B.S.) or a HG55 and a BWM. Not much you can't do with that setup.
Lugging a FFBM on a walk about isn't practical. I've done it and compare it to having a brick hanging off your belt.

Although a .30+ thick FFBM or ASH would be fun car camping, they are too thick for most any other situations.
