Hello All,

I was curious if anyone here has tried grinding a 3 edged chisel ground knife similar to the Ka-Bar/Becker Tool, Spec Plus tool or CRKT "MAK" tool. If so, how did you get the grinds to even up? Does the angled "middle" bevel have to be done first then the main and end bevels next to meet it, or does a jig have to be constructed so that all grind angles are done evenly? I gave this a try and tried to grind the main edge first, then the tip, then the angles portion and could not for the life of me, get them to all line up correctly. Any advice is appreciated........Rory

There are probably plenty of experienced makers who can knock that type of grind out free hand, but I'm likely not one of them. It's hard enough to keep a single grind line sharp and straight; when you add two more and add in the fact that they need to be not only straight but also parallel with each other line, the task is complicated exponentially.

A mill would work great for that type of grind, and there are jigs which can help you control the angle (various home-made rigs and Fred's bubble jig) that would be of value for completing such a grind.

I can freehand a chisel grind but for that paticular one to get the angles where they meet nice and even id probably use a jig set around 10 degrees or maybe 12ish
