Hello. My Father has been a Tool and Die worker and Machinist for over 40 years. I have been thinking about having him make a drop point skinner blade at work under the assumption it is for me. In reality it will be for him. I'd like to design the blade and then have a maker grind and polish the blade, and have my brother do the scales. I think after 40 years it would be nice for him to have something he can take away from his work besides a paycheck. Any advice on what needs to be done as far as shaping the blade? I'm not sure what steels he has access to at work, but suggestions are appreciated. I would want to go high carbon, with a focus on edge retention, semi-stainless but not as hard as D2, although a tool steel would be fitting for him. Any suggestions?
