I bought a schatt and morgan executive which is a very similar pattern to a Northwoods Indian River Jack. The handles are very knarly/sharp amber stag. Its so knarly that its uncomfortable to hold and then the shield fell off as soon as I opened the box ! So I am looking at this as an opportunity to have some fun in refinishong the handles myself.
My question is whats the best way to file the handles down smooth and then after I have done that how do I polish the filed stag surce back to a shine ?

Thanks Nik

I don't do a lot of work with stag, but I'd think a fine scotch bright belt or wheel might de-burr enough of the sharpness to make it comfortable without removing too much material. From there, some polishing compound on a buff would polish it up nicely. Just be mindful of using light pressure and not overheating the stag.

Also be mindful of your bolsters and try not to gouge out the material too much where the stag mates up.

If you don't have a belt grinder or a buffer, you could probably do much of the work with a drill press and the appropriate drill mandrels.

Another option would be some foam sanding pads if you want to do it all by hand. You can then step up to micro-mesh for a really fine polish.

File it to where you want it. Then, sand with 400 grit sandpaper, then 600-800 grit, then buff with green compound.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm off to give it a go and see how it turns out !
