I am interested in purchasing a knife with someone who has no feedback from which I can be assured he is trustworthy. What advice can you fellows offer to help me decide what to do? Thanks.

Also - a way to get a bit of a feel of a fellow BF member's way of moving in the world is to look through his/her past posts. Tone and attitude, commiseration or snark, can be pretty revealing.

Make sure that if someone is communicating with you ONLY through emails that you learn the seller/buyer's BF name. Don't just agree to terms from email discussion without having a clue which supposed BF member you are talking to. Ask them if they have a track record on eBay or other selling forums. If they are willing to share that (and if they are legit, there is no reason why the wouldn't) you can do a bit more research.

IN ANY CASE - PAYPAL Goods & Services is the only way to go. Protects you and the seller.

We all started here on the exchange at one time. Thanks to trusting souls and our own good action, we build our credibility

Good luck.

Ray

As mentioned above, research his posts. Look to see if he has bought or sold anything on the forum. If he has any transactions more than a week old, send PM's to the member(s) he dealt with and ask them why they haven't left him feedback.

Some people simply don't leave feedback so that might be the reason he has none but asking those he has dealt with is a good way to find out.

That is excellent advice Ray. I appreciate it.

If possible, request tracking with a signature. Video the mail person handing you the package and you opening the package. This should be proof to ensure you’re getting what you paid for.
Hopefully you’ll be able to delete it. I’d let the seller know about doing a video and explain that you just want to be cautious since he doesn’t have any history here.

Thanks for the tip. I appreciate it.

Use PayPal goods and services and you have a trader rating of 4 so think about the guy that gave you your first buy here. Think maybe the new guy with zero rating is as worried as much about you as you are him. I mean you joined in may not like you are a long time upstanding member yourself but someone decided to to take a chance on you kinda time to do the same.

Frank, even though your name isn’t likely Frank, but true.

As stated:
1) Search the sellers name here and on google.
2) Ask questions before committing to buy.
3) Ask for photos- Verify the details.
4) Verify shipping is what you want- Insured \ Carrier \ etc.
5) Pay via Paypal Goods and Services.
6) Save the communication with the buyer.
7) Save any photos to reference back to- some buyers scrub the ad after the sale.
8) Send seller confirmation when you send payment.
9) Upon receipt of the knife inspect it to make sure it is as advertised.
10) Upon acceptance of the knife notify the Seller it arrived and meets your expectations. This can be done with an email or better just leaving appropriate feedback.
11) Communicate
12) If the package gets mis-directed by the Post Office- It's not the sellers fault. Be patient.
