Looking for a new EDC, $50-$100, assisted-opening would be nice but is unnecessary, blade will see a great deal of light to medium cutting (Heavy plastic wrap, cardboard, etc.), need a larger folder, 7" or bigger would be best. Most important characteristics: Price, Size, Edge Retention.

Thanks! :)

sorry those are a bit out of your price range: take a look at the Spyderco Calypso Jr. its a bit smaller but an excellent knife and cheaper too.

Also take a look at the benchmade griptillian.

A benchmade 710, 805, or 806 would probably be a good choice. They're a hair over 100 but you get a whole lot of knife for the money.

You won't find any 7 inch folder for under $100. If you need something that big, just spend $50 on a Ka-Bar or a Becker 7

ascoe, he means OAL of 7 right?

anyway, s0rce recommended everything i would have said. get an 806D2, thats plenty big.

I did mean OAL. :)

Thanks... so Benchmade or Spyderco seem to be the least-maligned knives here... okay then.

Another thought... I don't know much about Spyderco (Please don't kill me), and I'm wondering about that AUS6 and 8... is their heat treatment good enough for those?

Anyone know anything about the Spyderco Centofante III FRN? Meets my price preferences, size preference, VG-10 is great steel, and it's visually appealing, even to me, who is biased against the Spyderco look...

does it have to be a folder or would a fixed blade do as well.

finding a folder with that large of a blade in your price range isn't too feasible, but a fixed blade is.

check out the cold steel voyagerXL though, it's got a 6" hollow ground blade. good slicer, reliable knife, and great value, but since it's hollow ground try not to pry anything with it.

easily the spyderco manix. it's one of the best folders out there, regardless of price - i'm a total fan. top notch materials, too. you gotta handle one to truly appreciate what the buzz is about. you can get one for just a hair over 100 bucks.

I see nice materials and a great look. Great knife, and only twice as much as the most I can afford. :(

Still wondering about this knife, too. And thanks for all the advice, I think the Spydercos are growing on me... enough to open my wallet... many times...

I prefer the flat-grind on the Calypso over the hollow-grind (i think) on the centofante, although I love the look of the Centofante III

Pardon my n00bness, I actually do know a small bit about knives, but can someone explain to me the concept of blade grind? I'm not sure what makes them different. Thanks muchly...

im sure that spyderco's treatment on AUS-6 and 8 is fine, but there's no point in buying those when they have so many knives in VG-10 and even S30V. the price difference is well worth it.

Well... just bought a Spyderco Centofante III... here's hoping! Has anybody ever been disappointed with a Spyderco? This one sounds like it'll be a great EDC knife for me... Drooling already. Gah, I need to block eBay AND THIS SITE from my computer... I'm too poor for this hobby...

For cutting plastic wrap and cardboard - Grey FRN Calypso Jr.
You will struggle to find a better knife for this type of work and will cost you less than $50.00.
I am sure you will be happy with the Centofante - VG10 is really easy to sharpen and holds a sharp edge well, even when hacking up cardboard.

Argh. Now I find out.

Oh well. I'll just have to become like most of the other members here and end up with 92347862475864 knives for EDC... noes....

It gets more exciting when you rationalize carrying two, then three knives and a flashlight for edc. :D
You'll be happy with the spydie
