Advice on buying a knife

Kate,

Welcome to BladeForums! I have an older model Leatherman Super Tool, and I really like it.

There are a lot of good knives out there, including Benchmade, Spyderco and others. Based on your criteria of durability and your hand size, I would recommend a smaller fixed blade knife, with a type of steel that is fairly rust resistant, and without serrations (it makes sharpening easier). The BK&T knives are a good value, but their handles would be too large for you.

The Busse knives are expensive, but I feel you do get what you pay for. They also hold their value fairly well, especially if the model has been discontinued for a few years (some of the older ones sell for more in used condition than they did when they were new). I would recommend either the Badger Attack 3 or the Satin Jack models for your hand size and the blade style (you can save $35 by going with the standard canvas micarta handles). Busse is getting ready to introduce some new models, probably in the next few months, so you might want to wait to see the new ones. Busse uses a proprietary steel called INFI that is tough (very hard to break), holds an edge well, and while technically not a stainless steel, it just does not rust easily at all. I do not wipe my Busse's with any kind of oil or other rust preventative, and I have never seen a speck of rust on them. Years ago I did not buy any Busse knives because of the cost and being somewhat skeptical of the performance claims - what a mistake that was! Stop by the Busse area in BladeForums to get some more opinions/recommendations.

Best wishes in your search!:)

Yes, emergency kits are regional specific... What kind of climate and terrain do you live around? Are there a lot of trees and brush? What kind of trees? Including a hand-axe will allow you to get away with a smaller or thinner knife, which will be easier to maintain in the "field". You may live near a major Metropolitan area like NYC where any sort of heavy knife, axe or saw will be close to useless, and a good prybar or crowbar would be worth it's weight in gold. Without telling us specifics which would allow some crazy stalker to show up on your lawn, tell us what your emergencies may be and what you will be up against...

The Beckers are super value knives, and they are super knives in any case, a Leatherman supertool would make a very versatile combo.

You guys advising Kate to get a Busse...lol, be a bit more realistic will ya? They're great knives and all but I really think in Kate's situation it's overkill.

Kate, I also vote for a multitool. I also advise to ask your question again in the Wilderness and Survival Skills subforum here, it's under the Tactics & Training heading. There have been many discussions there about emergency kits, and the frequenters of that subforum are a bit more realistic about knife needs than many of our more gung-ho members.

(You gung-ho Busse and Becker guys, don't take offense. I love ya but I really think you're leading Kate wrong here. Read, she has small hands and is probably petite).

Grapevine,

Thanks for your post. For light duty cutting I would agree that a Busse would be overkill, but for the possibility of hard use I would still recommend Busse unless it would impose a financial hardship. For an emergency kit I would say buy the best quality knife you can reasonably afford. Many people do not need a fast car or heavy duty truck for everyday use, but they are nice when you do need the extra performance. I have had mixed success with inexpensive knives, and I would not want to depend on some of them in a real emergency.

I recommended the Busse Badger Attack 3 or Satin Jack with her small hand size in mind - they do not have the large size handles like the E-handle models.

Hey Gene,

I think the Satin Jack and BA still have big handles when you're talking about a woman's small hands. They're more for medium sized men's hands and they're uncomfortable to some men even at that.

The problem I have with Busses is that they're not heavy duty "cutters". They're heavy duty abuse your knife knives. They excell over most other knives in prying and hacking, but not cutting. They're actually pretty poor cutters. Before they came along people have been using less overbuilt knives in less civilized times for decades without problem.

For their price, you can get the entire emergency kit that will include a small crowbar, a small hatchet, a good cutting fixed blade knife, a multitool, a folding saw, emergency blanket, fire making material, water purification tablets, whistle, pepper spray, paracord, duct tape, various first aid supplies, and a phone card, among other things. The crowbar, hatchet, and knife combination already does everything better than a Busse for less than a Busse.

If the scenario is that she walks into the urban, wild, or battlefield unknown with no other tool but one, then a Busse or Becker would make sense. But we're talking about an emergency kit here...emphasis on kit.

Kate,

Welcome to the forums.

If you ask an open ended question on this site, you are going to get hundreds of recommendations, which may or may not be useful. Tell us a bit more about the scenario you have in mind and we will try to work up some solutions. You may need a knife, or a few knives, or even some other combination of tools.

Tell us how and where you intend to use this kit, and which items you have already decided on.

BTW, I would start with either a good multi-tool (if you plan to be around something mechanical), or a good Swiss Army Knife (for general outdoor usuage).

Man.....Look at all those recommendations. Ya gotta love a bunch of knife knuts. ----I love this forum.

I strongly recommend to visit:

http://www.equipped.org

Read the articles on emergency kits, knives, etc. and take a look at their forums.

Whatever you decide to get, learn, practice and use it, become familiar with it before the emergency comes.

Hi Kate,

I would recommend the knives in the Companion series which are the top three knives on the page I linked to. I'm not sure which one would suit your needs the best because I don't know how large of a knife you are looking for.
