Advice on folder for friend

I want to get my friend a folder for his birthday. Right now my two main choices are either a Calypso Jr Lightweight, or a Native. He said he wanted a stainless handled Spyderco but me, being the good knife knut friend, is going to get him the zytel handled version because the stainless version adds weight, has less grip, and its only upside is it's looks (which would look ugly after it's handle gets scratches anyway).

Which would you get for a friend? Why? And which do you think is more ergonomic in general? I have handled a stainless calypso jr and it's handle ergonomics really did not work for me.

I would reconmmend the Calypso Jr. Lightweight. This is my favorite Zytel handled knife. It is sharp as you will ever get and the flat ground blade is great.

Given the 2 choices you listed, I' d go with the Calypso LW. Better steel IME, and the scales texture beats the hell out of any steel ones.(unless they are aftermarket textured with a blast finish or checkered!)

Again, given the two choices, I'd choose the Calypso Jr, Ltwt for all the reasons already given.

Of course, the BF Native (with G-10, not the zytel version) blows both of them away in terms of blade steel, ergonomics and looks (personal opinion), but then it costs more (and may be getting scarcer by the minute).

And to confuse the issue ... of all my Spydercos, my (guy) friends are unanimous in their praise for the Wegner Jr. What works for your friend (as for all of us) will depend on what his needs are.

John,

You may want to think about the size of your friend's hands. I don't think I have particularly big hands, but I find the Native fits my hand beautifully, especially when I choke up on the blade. I haven't had the pleasure of handling a Calypso Jr. (yet

) but, going by my other small Spydies, I have a feeling that it may not be quite as comfortable (for me). As always Y(or his)MMV
