Advice on Gent's Knife

The above refers to the model 1993-2, and it's a beautiful knife. I don't think it has a clip, and comes with a small leather sheath, but could be carried bare in the pocket. Not your modern 1-handed opener, though...:D

It doesn't have a clip but it has a sheath with a clip :) though the sheath is not of highest quality.

There is very nice detail, that the lockbar, the spring holder and the spring itself are highly polished from the inner side of the handle. That it is really nice.

Fit and finish on the piece I bought could be improved (e.g. slightly uneven grind, little bit of horizontal bladeplay, the blade is not completely centered when closed)... but otherwise it is a nice knife.

I'd like to ask for any and all input: I wear suits daily and need a knife to cut packages quite frequently. I am in pharmaceutical sales, so I can't walk into a doctor's office and have people noticing a knife in my pocket. Aside from the $400 CRK Mnandi, does anyone know of a knife that is 1)very discreet with little to no knife showing above the clip and 2) not too big? I've currently got a SOG Flash as the clip was perfect (looked like a laser pointer) but the fit/finish is suspect and it rattles. Looking forward to your suggestions.
I bought a ZT 0302 from NGK last week, but it just doesn't go with a suit!:D

Another good option is a Kershaw Nakamura.
This knife is one-hand opening. It is not big(2 7/8") and looks very good.
And I think people will be admiring it so much when they see it that they wont think about being scared or offended.
The pocket clip isnt totally at the edge but shows only a little part of the knife.

I haven't handled this knife myself yet, but expect to be in the near future thanks to Thomas W.
The Nakamura is made of clad VG-10 that should perform very good , and will certainly be good enough to cut any package you want it to.

I'd go with the Leek or Splinter. The Splinter is a really classy looking knife.
Also as someone mentioned, STR can make you a custom low rider clip. I
think he generally charges around $20 +.

Folks, I really appreciate all the great ideas. I think at this time I'm looking hardest at the soup can lid (SPX, do you think Carilion will let me sharpen it on the parking lot pavement without calling the cops?:D) I like the Leek, but don't like tipdown carry.

The Splinter and the Nakamura are both really good looking. I liked the Kiwi idea and actually emailed STR to see if he could put a clip on it (I gotta have a clip) but he said the steel is so hard it would be iffy. Sooo.... 1)soupcan lid 2)Nakamura 3)Splinter. Any more suggestions? Thanks so much guys!

(BTW, SPX I went to NGK last week and one of the girls asked if I was you! I told them I wasn't that lucky!)

I like your taste for tip-up, only way to go for me. Fortunately, the Leek CAN be switched for tip up--I've done so with my rainbow leek.

Get the leek.

Small and hides in your palm really well. Sexy looking in person too and you still get the AO. Don't get the leek if you dont want it sticking out of the pocket. Tip down it sits low but tip up is a different story. Tip down with the AO I have not found to be an inconvenience and I prefer the lower profile outside pocket.

The above image is the chive which I think is the perfect size for people who really will use it most as a box cutter. Plus the frame lock leeks are so thin that they disappear in formal pants.

The chive is only tip-down--The OP wants tip-up. Yeah, it sticks out a leetle, not that bad. The only other thing is a blur--but that's a bit on the bigger side.

Hey Clint,

When you were at NGK, did you take a look at the Shallot? Frame lock, tip up option, SpeedSafe and a very handsome knife. Kinda like a slightly larger Leek. NOT a mall ninja type knife at all. When in suit and tie, I often carry mine. It's light enough to clip in my breast pocket, with no sag. Wears great in my pocket, too. And in the near future, Kershaw is coming out with an all black model. Perfect for a dark suit.

Perhaps the girls at NGK thought you were me because of your avatar. I've been told many times I look like Christopher Walken. And right now, you, or Christopher Walken, doesn't want to be me. These crazy markets are a b*$%h!

Anyways, here's a link to some pics of the Shallot:

On the soup can thing, Carilion cops wouldn't know what you're doing anyway. Long story short, Sandy worked for them for 11 years (IV pharmacist) and once I saw some of them roaming around in a golf cart that had Carilion Poloce painted on the side of it. I asked them what Poloce was, and they didn't think it was funny...Now LGH is a different matter......they don't mess around in Salem!

Keep in touch!

Brad

I very much like the look of that Splinter but can't ascertain the size or weight. Any info?

The Scallion might be a choice here too.

Spyderco's Kopa would seem to fit the bill, especially the one in old school jigged bone:thumbup:

W.R.CASE Mini Copperlock is another outsider, no clip but lockback, ultra slim and an un-threatening traditional look about it.
