No, I'm not a wandering poet!
I've had some Vasque Sundowners (newest generation) that fit my wide feet like, well, a really nice fitting pair of boots! They are showing a little age, and I'm looking for something new for my birthday! I really like the looks of Asolo type boots where the fabric is really thick and stiff, and the laces go down to the toes. I need boots with a wide fit, of high quality, and trail tested performance, also a decent price is prefered (under $150, more under is better). My wife doesn't like it when I wear the Sundowners out (but I tell her how it is... then go change my shoes), so something that looks nice would be a definite plus. I'm also looking for a nice EDC ink pen. I like black metal capped pens under $30. Thank you for any and all suggestions.

I had a pair of Asolo boots and the toe box was too small (which I didn't like), and the boot iteself was very stiff and narrow (which I did like). Maybe they make extra-wide sizes?

I think the Danner Mountain Lights have a similar fit to the Sundowners, although maybe not quite as wide.

Good Luck in your quest,
-Bob

I wear a previous generation to the one below, and I am quite happy. I can walk in a rocky terrain all day, and my feet aren't tired. These boots are like Sundowners, but may be a bit more heavy duty, have stiffer sole and thicker side padding. Of course, you should find them somewhere and try them first:

I like the Danners and they may fit your preferences. I've had a pair for 15+ years now and love them.

For the pen, check the Rotring line. Not a bad price and I really like mine. All metal and under $30!

Hi michaelmcgo-

I would conduct individual searches on this forum using a variety of terms. Those two items aren't typically discussed simultaneously. Good luck and have a great New Year's Eve celebration.

I bought a pair of New Balance hiking boots (model #851) from Cabela's ($90). My feet is also wide (EEEE - yes that's 4 E) and the New Balance is very confortable and light. I also have a pair of Birkenstock hiking boots but those are on the expensive side ($200). BTW, I perfer mid-high boots because they are more comfortable for me.

I purchased a Rotring 600 roller ball pen from Daly's Pen Shop online for about $37. This model is all metal and has some heft to them. I use this pen with a Cross ball point as backup. On my keychain I have an Inka pen which I find pretty handy when I am on the road without my other EDC pens.

I have an all metal "Rite in the Rain" pen that was only 10 bucks. Its my favorite pen. I don't know if it uses the same pressurized ink as the Fisher Space Pen, but my Fisher Bullet Space Pen blobs awful and my Rite in the Rain pen has never done that. They both work on pretty much any surface. The Fisher works a little better on greasy\waxy surfaces, probably because it seems to be a medium point and the Rite in the Rain is fine point.

i think parker makes capped metal pens for a good price, both ballpoint and rollerball.

I have wide feet. My current hiking boots are the Meindl Borneo. I prefer the older, non Gore-Tex version.

I can recommend them very highly.

I have 7 pairs of hiking boots and as far as over all fit and feel please check out the asolo fugitive. It comes in wide with. There is no break in and feels great. Id wear it all day every day if i could but it has gor-tex and my feet run hot so i cant. But ive had them on 18 mile hikes with no problems. For everyday wear i like the dr marten 1460 or the 0939 in brown. the are light weight and have tons of cushon.

Lowa boots tend to run a little wider. That's my current choice. Got some Lowa Scout II's on sale from Sierra a good while back. I bought two pair. They're still going strong.

From one of the three reviews on the link above:

The Lowa Scouts are very nice boots. I have a low volume foot that is flat and very wide. As soon as I tried the boots on, I knew they were for me. I must have tried on at least 10 different pairs of boots and none of them gave me the immediate comfort I was looking for except for these."

I have had about 4 pair of Merrell boots, different kinds, light hikers, hikers, winter hikers, they have all been great. There soles are good for most any terrain, they seem to grip pretty good for me. I also like the Kamik boots, they are well made and have stood up to the abuse of climbing fences, hiking in the woods, climbing on rocky areas and almost everyday use. You may just need to find a store and start trying some one. Good luck with your search, my dad had the same problem (wide feet) and occassionally bought two pairs of boots when he found something he liked.

I just floated this by John (the young man who is now deployed) he said get red wing boots, & a 10 pack of bics.

Don't know too much about hiking boots other than urban hikers so I'll be quiet on that.

For a good pen look at the Fisher Shuttle in black I know its a retractable but I think you'll like it. If you really want black with a cap, I'd go for a Fisher bullet in black or a Cross Century, Parker Sonnet, or Waterman Expert, but as long as I'm not in a coat and tie I carry a Fisher.

Oh Yeah! +1 for Merrell's! dang comfy boots, and they are what I call 'sticky' meaning they have an uncanny traction that few boots can duplicate. I own three pair and looking for my 4th.

I had a pair of Lowa's that fell apart after a short time. Replaced them with a pair of Montrail Moraines for heavy duty stuff. These are great boots after the long break in period. I went to buy a pair of Scarpa's, but the Montrail's fit better. All boots aren't sized the same, best to try them first.

About one year ago, I received an S.T. Dupont (made in france) pen as a gift. It hasn't held up very well. The cap is loose with a lot of play and the finish is revealing the brass. I am looking at one of these to replace it.

Lamy Studio or Lamy 2000 in rollerball.
