Advice on new television.

If you were local I'd sell ya one and install it for you.

First thing I would have told you to NOT get a plasma. I won't recomend anything but LCDs now especially if you ever plan to hook it up to a computer or media PC. Burn in is just way too easy on plasmas.

I can probably sell you one for cheaper than most places as well, not sure if shipping would kill the price advantage though.

Plasmas are older technology.

Get a 1080p rear projector. Sony SXRD or Samsung.

They have the best picture and anything else is not even close.

Do not get anything smaller than a 50 inch. Bigger is better and you will never regret it.

And what 1080p source are you feeding it. may I ask?

Or are you letting the internal, $200 chip, scale it for you?

I've been doing this for 10 years, I sell Samsung and Sony AND Panasonic.....I think you did just fine, after all, does it look good to you? Then it's your perfect set.

To the best of my knowledge tilting a plasma screen beyond a certain angle does cause damage. Apparently the sets have inbuilt tilt detectors which void the manufacturers warranty if activated!!! I hope things have moved on and this is no longer the case but it should be bourne in mind...Best of luck

I am not sure what you are saying, however the the Sony SXRD and the Samsung 1080p are rated as having the best pic in an affordable price range.

If you sell them then you should have experienced this yourself.

They may not have a 1080p input on the back of the set but so what. There built in upconversion results in a much chrisper and significantly more vibrant picture.

Regarding 1080p sources, bluray and HD-DVD will or do have 1080p outputs.

My guess is (if it hasn't already started to happen) is the new DVD players will be built into the next gen of 1080p sets.

I do sell them and have "experienced" them, thanks for the backhanded compliment.

"Rated as best?" By whom? Funny, I sell ALL these brands and judge for myself, but, then again.......

The built-in upconversion, in my experience, works like garbage. Motion artifacting, dot crawl, makes many sources look "synthetic."

How many sets have you seen with this technology? Owned? Installed? Calibrated?

That being said, you couldn't GIVE me the Samsung 1080p DLP rear pro and SXRD, while better, still suffers from the same issues I've detailed above.

And, jsmatos wanted to hang her display over her fireplace; which cannot be done with either of the sets you love so much.

Used to be the case but not any longer.

In fact, the PACKING was the issue, it lefts the glass unsupported if flat or tipped; newer packing boxes account for that (somewhat).

I still advise against it and make dealers sign waivers when they lay plasmas down in the back of their trucks. Just me CYA.

bolth lcd and plasma will be old school in a year or so-was watching hd net and there is a new chip that gives the look of a tube tv and is as thin as a lcd-

looks like its the future of tv's

Actually OLED and other "new" technology displays were put on the back burner recently because plasma has dropped in price so quickly that they can't even sell them as a "step-up." Or justify the $800M cost of a fabrication plant.

prices on all have started dropping real fast recently-
saw a small crt(27") for under $250

Just met with one of our vendors....get ready for $999 42" HD plasma by Christmas.

My head hurts.

The picture looks like you'd expect on an entry-level, discount item.

The performance/price equation carries through with this as with all items.

Thought I would resurrect this thread to avoid "why didn't you do a search" complaints. Sorry if its a thread jack. I can always start a new one.

My TV died this weekend. That's good news and bad news. I didn't want to get a new TV, but now I can justify it.

Looking for recommendations in the $1000.00 range. I know that won't get me into the big leagues, but its an upgrade over the old 27" that just died and over the $250 set that I bought for my son's room.

I have a medium sized living room. I like simple, since I'm technohandicapped. I watch mostly sports and I'm not an audiophile or videophile. I just want to get a good set at a decent price. Thanks all!

The Sony 34 inch High Definition XBR is the best TV on the market in that price range. At $1138 at my "big box" store last time I checked, it is slightly out of your targeted price but, it is a truly superior television set.

Every sales person I have talked to and all of my tech savvy friends consistently say this is the television to get for quality.

LCD's in this price range are inferior and generally do not support the resolutions that we will see in a few years with Hi Def. 1080P may not be widely available over the air today but, it will be here soon enough. Plus, if you watch DVD's you will get the benefit sooner with the new players that are hitting the market.

Can anybody give me any input on a Sony KDF-E50A10? Its a 50" rear projection LCD HDTV

Its about double what I wanted to pay, but I can do the 12 month same as case and might be able to slide it by the wife:p
