Advice/opinion on my intended EDC gear list

I have just discovered this new light and am considering putting in into my new EDC. It is small (alittle smaller than a SF E1e), 7LED 1 CR123 battery and has some very impressive output (nearly 100 lums! )

It is less than $45 and looks like it has the making to be a new "to have" light. Since Arc folded, this may be taking the place that they have left open. There are even rumors that the people who made the things for Arc were these people and now they are continuing the tradition of small and bright lights. Who knows!

Good luck...

For less than 25 bucks, at Target stores, you can pick up a Dorcy 1 watt luxeon LED light. It runs on 3 AAA batteries bright for a good two hours and useable light for more than 5 (tested this myself - could be 10 hours, I just didn't have the patience). You can pack lots of AAA batteries in a small space. This light is has a deep reflector, and it throws fairly well. It's also much much much brighter than any regular LED lights. It's not (as bright as) a surefire but lasts longer on a batt change and uses common batts. The bulb never needs replacing and it should take a decent jolt. I'm not sure if it's waterproof - for 25.00 I doubt it.

It's 5.5" long and 1 3/16" at the bezel and 1 1/16" at the tail.

I got one and was so impressed (for the money) that I went back the next day for another.

Check 'em out at Target or online, it's a grey anodized aluminum.

A 1 watt luxeon should be about twice as bright as, say the innova x5. Anyone have one and can make a comparison?

Got 4/5 stars at the ledmuseum review

(got to AA/AAA light reviews and look for "Dorcy LS" (Luxeon Star)
Another review here:

The Dorcy rated the same for output as a MAG 4D: (look for Dorcy luxeon 38.00 on comparison chart)
http://www.flashlightreviews.com/features/chart_overall.htm
And about the same as a surefire E1e for throw (distance): (24.87 on comparison chart)

Sorry but 7 LEDs does not equal 100 lumens. Each Nichia LED is capable of only a couple lumen at the most...

Peak certainly does give you a lot of choices though.

It's the thread back from the dead!

So this is my EDC gear at the end of it all:

mleroux-Imgp2008.jpg

  • Leatherman Wave (pre-2004 model)
  • Victorinox Signature mini pocket knife
  • Sony Ericsson T630 with some PDA features (notably calendar)
  • Ultra-flat Jeep leather wallet
  • White gold 'comfy-fit' (slightly thicker, rounded) wedding band
  • Seiko Perpetual Calendar Titanium
  • El Cheapo horizontal storage pouch with belt clip
  • Photon Microlight II
  • Cricket mini electronic lighter
  • Two-tone gold/stainless Parker with Gel refill
  • Two-tone gold/stainless Parker fountain pen
  • Pentax Optio 330GS (not shown, obviously)
  • Oakley A-wires

The el cheapo (like less than $7 U.S.) pouch solved the "multi-tool and friends" problem. It beautifully holds the Leatherman, Victorinox, Photon II and Cricket lighter:

And it all fits snugly! Like this:

Lighter and Photon, then SAK and finally the Wave on top. Easy access in order of my frequency of usage. No chance of accidentally switching the Photon on and having it run flat either, since I actually store it with the button facing down. This is the size compared to the original Leatherman pouch:

Sorry, the angle doesn't show off the scale too well but it's virtually the same dimensions. Much better than the Nite-Ize idea. It sits much better than the original pouch because of the horizontal position. It was designed for a cellphone, so it's sheeple friendly too. It closes very securely with four magnets and this also means I can open it, take out the Wave and open a blade all with one hand. Same goes for putting it back, of course. The clip is nice and sturdy, together with an extra belt loop for when needed:

I like it. Lots!

P.S. As you can see I got a little Photon in the end. Does very well for my purposes! Maybe later on I'll get a Photon Freedom and/or an Inova X5T but I'll have to justify it for myself.

It looks like there is a large opening at the bottom of the pouch. Is there a chance of the Victorinox or the Photon or the lighter falling out?

My thoughts, exactly.

personally I would replace the photon with a CMG ultra, and add a Spyderco Endura PE FRN...

Also I had a similar case to that for my cell phone, I sat down with it clipped to my belt and the thing caught on the seat and the metal belt clip snapped, the case ended up on the floor... :S be careful

I now only trust belt pouches that have a belt loop rather than a belt clip.

Where does one find the pouch? Seems perfect for my EDC:)
I bought the pouch from a little cellular accessories shop in a mall. It and similar designs are plentiful, in South Africa at least.

As for the opening in the bottom, refer to my third photo:

The lighter is narrow enough to allow it to go in flat with ease, but at the same time wide enough to just fit securely, so it doesn't move around. It also sits, not in the middle but in the one corner of the pouch, so there's a nice wide leather strip to cover most of it. Then the Photon goes in on the other side, and it's width is about the same as the lighter so it also fits snugly. Because it's so small, the Photon gets totally covered by the leather strip on the other side. Finally, the two objects are also stored against one another. The Photon and the SAK are connected with a small keyring and then the SAK is "sandwiched" between the lighter and the Wave, so it also keeps the Photon in. Because the SAK and the Wave go on top, the lighter couldn't tilt and slide out even if it was narrow enough to move around in the pouch. It fits like a puzzle and I'm very impressed with this little configuration.

I've ran and jumped around with the pouch on me and nothing's come out in the weeks that I've had it. Even when the Wave is in use and out of the pouch everything else stays put. Nothing even rattles around! Why, you ask? Remember the four magnets that keeps the lid shut - they keep everything 'glued' in place, in addition to the naturally snug fit! The only thing that could fall out is the mostly-plastic lighter, and only when on its own in the pouch.

If you're looking for something similar, the pouch was designed for the Nokia 8000 series phones (8910i, 8310, etc.) and the opening is there to push the phone out from the bottom. That, by the way, works very well when only the Wave is in the pouch - this feature then still allows one-hand access.

P.S. Beats me why "NASA" is on the pouch. Any ideas? ;)
