I am hoping to get some input/advice on this one. I bought an old used different style Nicholson file for one dollar and have gotten it roughed out to this point. I wanted to leave some of the unique file pattern on the blade, but now that I am this far along, I am not sure how much to leave showing. Is it too distracting to have this much, or should I just leave just a hint of the patterning. My tools are so limited and it takes so long to do just a little bit of work, but I don't want to mess up too badly, because I think this one could come out interesting. Any advice to this newbie is greatly appreciated.

It looks fine to me. If anything take the grind a little higher. I am working on a file right now. How long did it take you to get the grind up that high and with what grits of belt? How thick is the file?

Frank:
After tempering the file, I started this morning on the grinding and ended up around 4 pm with what you see now. I only have a 6" bench grinder, so I really have to work hard a pretty long time to get it where it is now. I also use the flap wheels (60, 120, and 240 grits) once I get to this point. Have to take it slow so I don't overheat the file. The file started out as 1/4" thick, but I've taken it down a hair. I will thin it a little more just because the "ridges" are fairly prominent. I'm going to leave most of that showing in the handle area because it should give it a nice effect.

I'll second the motion to take the grind higher. It will work ok like it is, but would be a better cutting tool with higher grinds.

I think it will work better with higher grinds, but I really like the look of it now.

Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like I need to take the grinds up, so that's what I will do tomorrow. Got a nice piece of spalted maple that I am thinking about using for the scales.
