Advice Please - Should I stop cutting oversized blocks?

Whoever came up with 5 X 1.5 X 1 as "standard' should be strung up.

^^^ That! 5+ x 2 x 1.25 is good for me.

Thanks again everyone.
This really helps me to know what to do.
I will cut a mix of stuff. If a piece is over 6" long or over 2" wide, I will probably leave it that way instead of trimming it down.
A lot of what I am cutting starts as whole burls. Not like cutting strips off a board.
The main thing that is pre-planned when cutting is the thickness and grain/figure orientation. After that you go by how the wood looks, flaws and such when determining how wide and how long to go.

Butch,
Beautiful work!!!!

I appreciate your oversize blocks. The thicker stuff is great, sometimes i like the look of the grain on the side and at 1" plus thickness i can cut my own scales that way. For the oversize length its nice to be able to use the grain that looks best and have a matching piece left for an inlay or bolster etc.

Funny thing is, I actually need even bigger blocks than your usual oversized ones. I'd buy a lot more if I saw ones that were 6-7" long and 2-3" wide, and as is, I only buy stabilized wood from you.

might be cool if we can put in a "when you can get a nice piece XxXxX can you set it aside for me " its alot of extra work for you tho Mark

i know you already cut me lots of 2 tone stuff and im thankfull for it

I just do that because I want to see how it looks on one of your knives or razors.
Now I just have to talk you into using some of this stuff. I know, the photo stinks.

Maybe you can cut some end-grain blocks like I have seen here and there. Spalted maple gives a nice effect.

Ha, ha...to read through this thread you'd think the large blocks were selling like hotcakes...if hadn't been for the OP.

Mark I had another idea maybe should be considered, you have to be left with scraps here and there from all the cutting and sizing of blocks you do, I think many makers may find useful to pair up and use for odds and ends, bolsters, firesteels etc.. maybe have a bulk scrap section.... just thinking out loud, and the bits and pieces you gave me last time around will be put to good use for sure....!!

i use many 1 inc h cubes for spacers on my WA handles that it might be fun to buy by the LB but remember that the blocks are cut close to size then sent for stabilizing (not the other way around )

so losses woudl be even more if Mark sent off monster blocks then lost kerf and scrap bits on stabilized wood
