Thanks for setting him straight, brother. Sometimes these FNGs get so excited they can’t keep their facts in order. That’s the BFK, not the FKII which is shorter (scales are the same).
First one if free, newb, next one will have you brought before the CoCK Disciplinary Panel.Whoops! I flubbed that up, apologies.ferider has it correct: it is a Basic (BFK) on the left and a Utility Fighter on the right.

Interesting take, thank you. I think either a BFK or FK2 is probably what I am after at this point. The UF looks awesome but I think the FK handle is probably better for my intended use.Activities and requirements your described in your original post aligns better with basic field knife (BFK) compared with UF2. I assume you want the extended length for battonning through logs. If that is the case, you should look for knives without the swedge as the swedge is likely to destroy your batton. Also I think the handle shape of field knives are better suited for batoning task than tactical knives (i.e UF2, DEK etc). I have a UF2 and I do not think I want to batton with it for extended period of time due to the swedge and the handle shape.
You will have very difficult time convincing anyone selling you a HDFK at a reasonable price. It might be JUST possible if you make a ridiculous offer. It is up to you to decide if it is worth it or not. But HDFK is not a light knife. It is a survival type one tool option which would replace your small knife and hatchet in relatively less demanding circumstances. Certainly it will not be a replacement of an axe in you find yourself trapped in northern forests in winter or replacement of a carving knife if you find yourself in need of carving 10s of spoons. If you need to process a decent amount of firewood but you do not have 30 minutes before you freeze to death then it will do the job. It will also create a few tent pegs or will make semi decent feathers for second stage fuel.
BFK is also discontinued but it is a lower end model with less desire from the followers, so you might have a chance to convince someone to sell you one.
Alternatively, you can get a UF2 (even though it is not designed for your intended purpose) and after it is discontinued (which will happen soon) you can trade it for another model. Meantime you can use it and decide if you want to keep it or not. If you analyse the subform, particularly the buy and sell thread you will see that such approach is common. Buy it while you can use it and trade/sell it without any loss for something else. CPK knives goes only up in price not down, even if you use them.
No. But the FK2 and BFK scales are interchangeable.Interesting take, thank you. I think either a BFK or FK2 is probably what I am after at this point. The UF looks awesome but I think the FK handle is probably better for my intended use.
Now I just need to find one with some burlap micarta scales. Man, those look so sweet! Was there ever a BFK with burlap micarta scales?

OP, nobody here is telling you probably because they don't want you to compete in the Fri sales
If you like the HDFK, note that there is the SDFK coming soon (2 weeks ?). Maybe just wait ?
Yeah but I think it is worth mentioning that SDFK is a 7 inch knife and heavier than HDFK. Obviously my intention could not be to discourage the OP from competing on friday sale of SDFK as I am not even decided if I will get involved in SDFK Friday sale. And since the weight is one of OP's primary criteria, I see no point of advising SDFK.
Apologies, if I come across harsh it is not my intention but I should have made my position clear on that. I do not like the shark feeding frenzy situation on Friday sells let alone misinforming people to get an advantage of and fueling the craziness even more.

Thanks for this. Another member on this thread had pointed out this sale via PM and I am now communicating with the seller about a possible deal. I wish it was burlap micarta but I guess the next Carothers could always be sporting that configurationThere is a FK2 available on the exchange. And for what it's worth, I just had a good transaction with the seller.
Amazing! PM sent...I may have a set that are not being used. Lemme check the cpk inventory.
Eta: found 'em, yours if the deal works out. Shoot me a pm if you're interested. Won't even have to send them separately like that Caly.![]()
Good to hear Randy! It should serve you well cutting up cheeseburgers.Well folks, thanks to everyone's help here, I now have an FK2 enroute to me. I am excited to get my hands on it! Summer camping season around here is still going and I hope to be able to put it to good use. Is it crazy to say that I'm already starting to think about a second Carothers knife before my first one even gets here...?![]()
