I have just sent my mailing address to recieve the catalog from HI. I would like some advice from you all, who have a bit more experience then i in the matter, on the kukri that i should purchese. I would primarily carry it while camping/hiking (additionally, i am interested in a more modern sheath, similar to the one offered by cold Steel, any ideas?). It would also reside on my night stand in case of any unwanted visitors... As long as it is not too outragious price is not importent (this will be my birthday present to myself..hehheh).

thanks in advance for what i am sure will be helpful replys...

additionally: have any of you ever done business with a company called discount knives?

i plan on purchesing an Emerson La Griffe from them and would like to know if they are a reputable company...

The 16.5" WWII comes to mind. It is relatively light around 573 g, almost as good as a 15" Ang Khola in terms of chopping chopping, a great trail clear (though a little short) and excellent for cutting. This khukuri is what most people expect a khukuri to look like.

If you are really concern about weight a Sirupati or BAS might be better. There is a very signifigant decrease in cutting and chop ability in going from a WWII to a BAS or Sirupati.

The only negative experience I have had with the 16.5" WWII is the brass buttcap can digging into my hand. This is easily fixed with a file if require.

I believe kydex sheaths are available from Blade Tech, Ciro(75) and a few others. You might be able to get the CS sheath from Cold Steel. The 16.5" WWII will fit into it, well at least mine did. I prefer the traditional sheath as it will not cause the knife to rust (CS claim not mine).

While a 16.5" WWII would be excellent for unexpected visitors, I do not use my H.I. khukuri's for that. They often travel with me and sometimes do not get unpacked until I remember. I am starting to think a second CS shovel would be quite good for unexpected visitors.

Bryan, my choice would be the 15" AK. It's a real workhorse that's absolutely indestructible. However, it is a bit on the heavy side, which might be a consideration if you're going to be carrying a lot of gear for any length of time. But truly, just about any HI khuk will serve you well, so you can't go wrong -- just look them over on the HI website and go with the one that strikes your fancy.

Don't buy any khukuris Bryan!

They are too addictive, run while you still can!

heh cant run...too late! well thanks for the advice everyone...i need to go to work now but i will make a decision tonight...

does anyone have any experience doing business with the company i mentioned?

I haven't heard of the discount company that you asked about, but that doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot because I'm a relative newcomer to the knife scene.

Bryan,

Discount Knives is indeed a legit company, and their service is excellent. I just bought an AFCK, Nimravus, and a Buck 110 from them, and have also bought some Spyderco kitchen knives from him in the past. He ships everything USPS Priority mail (insured) and his prices are quite reasonable.

Like you'll have any money for other knives once you start buying khukuris anyway

Hmmm...the guys around here with the most knowledge and experience with khukuris, Pala and Uncle Bill, seem to agree that the Gelbu Special is the best tool/weapon combination available.

I'd check that one out too.

Dave.

Hi Bryan,
If I were able to have only one (horrible thought & very unlikely), I'd pick the 18" WWII. My AK is more of a pure chopping machine & Sirupatis lend themselves more toward MA applications. As Will has said, the WWII approaches the performance of the AK for chopping, yet it is light & fast enough in the hand for other applications as well.

Now, I'll contradict myself regarding Sirupatis. Although they are clearly the lightweights of the HI line, they are not in the same class as light weight Western-style fighters. Although generally smaller and sleeker than other HIs, they retain the khukuris' forward balance and would be quite capable of handling typical camp chores. (My 16" HI Sirupati is about an inch longer in overall length than my Busse Basic #9 and is heavier with a spine that is about 1/3 thicker than the Busse.)

I wouldn't automatically look for a more modern sheath until you've used the traditional scabbard for a while. Frankly, I like the way the scabbard can be slipped out of the frog as required for driving, etc.

Also, don't fret too much over the choice of your first HI khukuri. I'm sure it won't be your last.

Excellent, so how do i order? I sent my mailing address... Should i call that nevada phone number or will i recieve an order form in the mail along with the brochure i requested?

:
Well if I ain't too late I would recommend the Gelbu Special for a first Khukuri.
At 19" and with a decent chakma and karda it is the most versatile Khukuri I have to date.Mine is rapidly becoming my favorite.

I used it to cut up a chicken the other day.Bones? What Bones???

I just washed it and wiped it dry.My g'daughter saw it later and asked if I had wiped it off because of the discoloration.I know it's gonna be one of my "Users" from now on so I ain't gonnabe so picky with it.As long as it's sharp and does the job is all I care.
That beautiful patina carbon steel gets is prettier to me than a shiny blade.
And hat way anyone that sees it knows it is a using knife.

From one extreme to the other.I saw a post in the general forum by Mike Turber about the problem and them working on it.Knives must be popular. He said the site is getting 200,000 hits a day. That's what's causing the eternal.infernal servor errors.

cant wait... i ordered my la griffe (well 2 but one is a gift for my girlfriend..hehheh) yesterday and once i have a nice kukri my arsenal will be complete for now...

I have a CS SRK knife that has a nylon sheath. Instructions say not to leave it in the sheath for extended periods of time due to corrosion concerns. The Khukuri sheath actually draws moisture away from the blade and into the wood.
Sometime back someone did a test in which the CS Khukuri was pitted against a HI product and both did well. The edge to overall effectiveness went to HI though. It should be back in the archives somewhere.

Pakcik Bill.
Any news on Gelbu Special #1? I hope to receive my order soon after Dashein! It seems every body recommended that model as #1!
