Hello all,
I am a new bladesmith and I am fascinated with damascus steel I do have a few questions as such.
I am not really going for a true damascus steel just some metals that contrast each other strongly enough so that the acid etching will show the distinction.
So for my first blade using this technique I was thinking of using some old stainless steel I had laying around and some 1095 high carbon steel. Now I know that you have to cut and stack the different metals and either weld or tie then together with steel wire so the billet will hold, but I had a specific question. Is it possible to use non galvanized steel barbed wire to hold my billet together or say use pieces of barbed wire down the middle of the billet and actually be able to get that barb wire look to transfer during the etching? Or is it not possible? Any help would be awesome thanks!

The usual damascus for modern smiths is carbon steel and nickel. Gives very high contrast between the layers when etched.
Damascus forging (I've done it) is a lot harder than it sounds. Getting good forge welds between folds is difficult; be sure to use
lots of flux (borax).
