Fiskars hatchet, one of my favorite camp tools year round. Takes a good edge, comes pretty sharp, and a little reprofiling goes a long way. Very lightweight. Hard not to try out at $20.

The Wetterlings or GB's will also do a great job, if you have the cash. (Wetterlings are about 1/3 the price of the GB's.)

Thanks. Can you recommend an outlet/retailer? I would like to get "hands on" before buying. Great pics and thanks again.

Meijer almost always carries them, if you have one near you. Sportsman's Warehouse usually carries just Gerber, but they might have them too. Not sure about Wally world.

I second the Fiskars. Cheap and good. The handle may look flimsy, but it's much more durable than any wooden handle I've used.

Another vote for the Fiskars. You can usually find them for under $15, they get the job done, are light, and sharpen up nicely.

Fiskars over here. Can't go wrong with the price you pay.

Wetterlings are also good. Gransfors are the best.

I'm going to get butt crazy on you guys and recommend the Wetterlings Medium hunter.

Good price, and a great axe. I've owned/own several and had very good luck with them.

Great response. Many thanks. Am headed to Sears to get a Fiskars ax my kids will be giving to me. Thanks again, guys (and Gals) .

Diddo to what Mike said

The GB Wildlife hatchet is a wonderfully made instrument.

Hope you find a Fiskars at Sears. . . Lowes carries them too but they are a seasonal item, so they don't have them in the stores right now. You may or may not find the same situation at Sears. Good luck!

For a buy-at-Sears, I prefer the Estwing 16" camper's axe to the Fiskars.

Gransfors Bruks are nice if you have the cash, but don't Rule out Snow & Neally. Their Penobscot Bay kindling axe is a sweet sister.

+4 on the 16" Eastwing camp axe.
thing is built like a tank and could probably chop one up. Its got a great foward weight to it that really helps chopping, and has a large edge for its size.

I also have a a Gerber/Fisker's that is the same size as the Eastwing and let me tell you what I have to work twice as hard to do the samething with it as it is much lighter. Also I am not happy with the quality of the steel in the G/F axe as mine has chipped out repeatedly.

my $.02
