Hi all,
I really want to get the damascus bolstered miniSpecter from AZCK, but I was wondering about the functionality of this knife. Is it more for one thing or the other (utility/defense)? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Hi Jon,

First, AZCK is great to work with. I don't think yo can go wrong with them. As far as Damascus goes, you might want to read the thread in this discussion group about Damascus -- "is damascus steel useable/practical?".

My own opinion is that damascus is for show. It looks wonderful and if you're not planning on using the knife it's a good choice. For everyday carry whether for utility or self defense or both, I'd choose a plain stainless like ATS 34.

The Specter is a nice looking knife. The self defense guys will have to answer about its usefulness in that area although I believe Allen's designs usually have that covered. The blade has a nice belly on it and it look like it would work OK for utility tasks. The bottom line is whether you like it and it works for you.

The Specter is IMHO, the best of Allens entity series.

Big belly, strong tip, good handle etc etc.
Its the "right" size for a folder too.
I have owned 2 , my favorite being he did with a sebenza-style lock.

I would probably pass on a damascus blade for utility unless it was san-mai from Mike Norris, or Clad from Meier. They both have hardened tool steel cores with soft sides for flexibility. For bolsters any ss damascus should be nice.

AZCK is great to deal with and they have a superb reputation in the biz.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies, when speking of the bolsters I meant they were of damascus (Mike Norris I believe) and not the blade, the blade was a non-glare finish ats-34 I believe. Do either of you have experience with the smaller Specter (3 3/16in blade) or just the larger (4in)one? Thanks again.

Jon,

I have only handled the larger one. It is a big knife. The smaller one might be better for pocket carry and it is still a good size blade but I have not seen one in the flesh.

Hey Mike,
Thanks for the info, I intend on ordering the bolstered/carbon fiber, "Mini-Specter" from AZCK as a Xmas present to myself. I think the smaller size would be a better idea for pocket daily carry. I'm convinced. Thanks again.
