AEB-L fail

I purchased an Ames used and was not sure if the diamond penetrator was any good so I brought it to work and had the technician that does all the heat treating check it over since he uses the in house Rockwell testers all the time and he gave it a passing grade after inspecting it like a jeweler does...here is the link to the Ames company page where the sell the replacement parts.http://www.amesportablehardnesstesters.com/product/standard-diamond-penetrator/ You have to remember there are different models that will not work for checking Blade Hardness so beware of superficial testers and those that don't test in Rockwell "C" also the ball penetrator is useless it need to be the diamond. Very pricey at actually more than I remember...$425.00

I got a reply from that HGR company. They said they were a "surplus" store, and dont test or evaluate things here. And everything is sold as is.... How can they price things if they don't even know if they work?

That's a shaky prospect "Pig in a Poke" so to speak....My guess is they take a photo of the item they may or may not know if all the parts are there and if it comes in a case they check all the empty slots where they figure there should be extra parts and and spin a wheel to see what to ask thats why its $99....if it works great if not sorry we priced low to move it...

I'll just have to keep looking.

I did a quick search of ebay and found an Ames Model 1 in a case with 3 test blocks (you need those to calibrate before you do your actual RC test) looked in really good shape and had 4 different anvils in the case so looked pretty complete for under 4 bills....the diamond penetrator was attached and looked like the Stop Pin was bent (might have been banged or dropped)....They have a lot of the Superficial models listed for cheap but they are not adequate for RC high numbers....Look at the dial scale if it does not read 150 it won't work....Superficial scale is 45

Here is the tester many of us have purchased - http://www.grizzly.com/products/Hardness-Tester/G9645

Sad to say I purchased it at $1K shipped, but prices has dropped since I purchased.

On the AEB-L bending direct out of quench plates - that's pretty normal. That allows you time to straighten any warps in blade. Just give it a few minutes and the blade will be HARD and STIFF and will no longer bend. If you go direct from quench plates to sub zero bath you have to be careful so the blades don't warp (bend) while in dry ice bath.

Having fun!!!
