I am looking to make a batch of small EDC blades from AEB-L steel, after doing quite a bit of research it seems to have a pretty good reputation. Anyhow I'm looking for someone who can heat treat the batch once they're done, as I don't have the proper set up for this type of steel. I've yet to find a place that lists it on their website. Emailed a few and I'm still waiting to hear back. Bos heat treat was one. After searching through lots of old threads it looked like there might have been a member that did this as a service. I apologize if this isn't the right place for this, just looking for some answers. Appreciate any help!

I've used Peterson's a few times now for my AEB-L knives. I called and asked before hand and they said they can treat just about anything.

I do AEB-L for blade forums members. Currently doing a batch of 12 blades for a number here.

I've tried a few of the different heat treaters recommended here... do yourself a BIG favor and go with Peters. Arguably the best in the business--they come back perfect and straight as an arrow EVERY time.

Tru Grit does AEB-L and has Liquid Nitrogen Cryo.

Also they do not use a torch on your blade to straighten it like some heat treaters do.

You can send them one blade and it will run $16 with foil and cryo.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'm going to look into these. Does AEB-L have to have the cryo treatment done to them as well? Thanks

Ben

From what I've read/heard JT does a good job on AEB-L using Liquid Nitrogen with Quench plates so there's very little (if any) issue with warp. I'd sure give him a holler to at least check prices.

No it does not,

But for $4 for cryo it is worth the gains toughness, wear resistance .

Peters Heat Treat actually treats 60 to 70 percent of the AEB-L that goes out of our warehouse. We typically will send 100+ blanks at a time to them and they always come back true and straight.

Unfortunately plate quench isn't any guarantee of AEBL coming out of quench straight. I've had this stuff move on me at every stage of quench and temper, regardless of stress relieving cycles, prequenches, crying, asking nicely, or yelling. B-U was of no assistance whatsoever. Pretty sure my next batch will be the first batch I've ever outsourced heat treat for, and once it's gone, I'll walk away from it. Really don't see any advantage to the stuff, and I use far more consistent steels that retain an edge as well or better.

I shot him an email to see what he says.

Thanks for the info, $4 would be a small price to pay for those benefits it seems.

I get my AEB-L from Alpha Knife Suppy and it comes perfectly flat. Knifemaker Jeff Mutz at Trugrit has done thousands of blades and my AEB-L always comes dead nutz straight and I like it at 61-62 c.

It is my favorite stainless currently and the feed back from hard core hunters is they are thrilled with the edge holding and able process several animals without having to go to the stone.
