Hello!

I'm about to heat treat some aeb-l blades but can't find any HT information about aeb-l.

Do anybody here know how to HT aeb-l?

Regards Jakob

What hardness are you trying to achieve on an RC scale. I have the data. Heat treat it like 440C and it does very good and responds well to a cryogenic cooling between initial heat and tempering.

From Uddeholm - 1870 F hardening [10 minutes] oil quench
Temper - 212 F - 63 HRc
392 F 60
572 F 57

1.Bring metal up to 1080C (hold for 5-10 minutes) and either air or oil quench. (oil is recommended with thicker pices). 2. -60C subzero treat, then temper at 200c for two hours for a 59-61 HRC. Repeat step 2 for a double temper. The graph from Uddeholm shows at 200C to be 60RC and 300C shows a HRC of 57. Hope this helps. This was taken from their HT data sheet and their telephone number is shown as: +46-563 513 00. Hope this helps.

IF you have dry ice and acetone, then this will suffice for the cyrogenic cooling between initial quench and tempering.

Thank you "mete" and "akoklat"!

The blades are 3,5mm thick so air quench should be fine I guess.

I don't have any dry ice I'm afaraid but if I aim for about 61 Hrc with the colling treatment, shouldn't I the get about 59 without the cooling?

Many thanks!

In theory yes, However, I have achieved great success with AEB-L with HRC 61-57. At HRC 57 it is tougher. My son used a double edge fighter with a 6" blade from 1/8" stock and tempered to HRC of 57 while deployed to Thailand. He skinned rats, snakes and cracked coconuts with it, the knife held up. go figure!:D
