I started these a while ago and they are back on! The heat treat went great and it's time for grinding!

I have some Blackwood in for octagonal profiled Wa handles, I'm excited about these. My first Wa or "stick tang" handles!

I'm really happy with the grinds, these are pulled to about 1 mm from the top with an even shoulder. They will be "singing" thin!

This is at 80 grit... they are much thinner now! Hollow main grind and convex reverse...

Lots of grinding and sanding later... hand rubbed to 800 grit. I still need to do more work on everything grind wise but the main grinds are looking good!

What will they be used for? They look kinda like straight razors

kitchen Utility - anytime you need something super sharp for detail work these will be great. Kitchen scalpel!

The lack of pointy tip is an advantage when doing clean work where you don't want a tip poking through. Peeling also... sushi prep, skinning, cleaning up beef, fish, pork...

Also sometimes you need super clean cuts where browning or oxidation is an issue like with Sushi, crudites, fruit trays or vegetable presentation. A super sharp, thin knife will cut cleaner and veggies will brown less.

The handles will be nice and full sized for control.

Ahhh, that makes sense. How long are these things? Like pairing knife size?

Thanks! By the way I have seen Japanese knives a lot like this but I think this idea is somewhat original....

They are larger paring knife size, if i were to hone the blades for shaving they would probably be ideal razors. Big respect to the straight razor makers though, that is a dedicated discipline of it's own.

I'll have to get some measurements later, I estimate these will be 8-9" long when completed.

I should mention... a paring knife is one that you use while the work is held in hand. These are a parer in that sense and will excel at tasks that do not need a piercing tip. It's rare to use a paring knife to poke through anything...

I like to make purpose built knives and this one takes me back to my days as a Sous Chef when I was the only person trusted to do sushi vegetable prep before dinner rush. I did lots of super fine cutting and peeling. This one would have been my go-to knife for the shift!

Thanks Rolf!

More Work in Progress!

Wa handle is started! I'm using my hacksaw to cut some African Blackwood I have had in my wood stash.

Square up the cut then drill a 3/8" hole about 3/4 through.

Drill some small holes for the ferrule on the other side.

Square up large piece and drill longer hole...

I'm using my Jeweler's Saw to connect the holes for the guard. It now needs to be filed to size.

Getting really close with small files...

Burn in the ferrule the rest of the way! This went even better than I had hoped for. I'm testing for fit in this pic.

Blackwood ferrule looking good! The fit is really nice with the burn in.

Parts! Silver Twill spacer is also now ready to go.

Almost time for glue-up! I'll have more progress on these later. Thanks for watching! :D
