AEB-L when to heat treat

I am getting ready to grind some thin paring knives [.060] and was reading that AEB-L has a tendency to warp while grinding untreated, especially the thin materials. The other forum recommended heat treat then grind. Thought I would see what you folks thought about this.

On regular thicknesses of AEB-L, 1/8" and thicker grind prior to HT. Thinner stock I grind post ht.
 
I plate quench after HT with two plates with the blade clamped between the plates. I cool with compressed air. When cool into the dry ice bath. No problems so far.

I would add one more thing.
Dont get to aggressive grinding after heat treat and ruin your hardness. I grind easy with bare fingers to help feel the heat level and I use a water mist to keep the heat down.

If it were me I'd do some very basic grinding pre-HT. Stay above .030 at the edge and you should be fine. This makes the final grinding easier and reduces the opportunity to overheat.
The bending in AEBL during grinding can be interesting. Grind each side a little and keep all even and it's not too much trouble. You get used to it as you work with it over time.
You can also straighten it pretty easily pre-HT. It isn't that bad.

I just can't ever seem to make this work. I left my last edge of 52100 at about .040-.045" and i still got a very slight bacon bend in one single part of it. My next one I'm going to leave .060 before heat treat.

I haven't done enough 52100 to know. I've done several but I guess I am timid about going too thin now.
.06 sounds good. :)
 
.06" is way to much.
If you're edge is curling at .04 there's another issue there.

How are you heat treating your steel?
 
ok, I just got an 8 inch gyuto back from HT, ground to .06. It has a little bow in it. I'd not go below .08 now, and maybe .1
It's just not worth it.
