Is the AEB-L from Alpha Knife Supply Uddeholm or Buderus?
If nobody knows off the top of their head I’ll call them tomorrow.
Thanks!

Both have the same composition, but they each have slightly different microstructures as received from the factories, thus leading to slightly different heat treating protocols.

is the heat treating protocol you are referring too the one from the manufacturers, or one you've worked out yourself? I view the manufacturers as a starting point, but the process I use would be different based on my own trials and results. What I'm getting at is, you may find the same process is the the best process for YOUR equipment and experience using either steel.

Ahh I see. Thanks for sharing that. I wouldn’t have even known to consider that coming from AKS. I thought all AKS stock comes annealed. I get most of my stock from AKS for several reasons, and that is one of them. Is annealed not the most relaxed state the steel can be in?

I apologize if my newbie questions are elementary to you seasoned makers & metallugists. The chemical makeup and microstructure stuff is tough stuff for me to process as a basic garage hobbiest, but I try my best to understand it.

Coarse spheroidite versus fine spheroidite. Uddeholm is cleaner and responds better to heat treat.

This will be my first time heat treating AEB-L myself, so I will be starting with the heat treating data provided by Dr Larrin.

That’s not very helpful. I have the book, and he has tons of blogs. What exactly am I checking out?
I'm SO sorry for pointing you in the direction that gives you the EXACT answer that you're looking for! That said, I will go the extra mile here and suggest that Knifesteelnerds ALSO has a search function. Would it help if I held your hand? 😂

Sometimes it's easy to get lost in the sauce and not know where to start searching because there is so much sauce. Like I said before, I have the KSN resources, but they are thick. I wasn't sure what to actually search for, kinda like giving a guy a phone book when he doesn't know the last name of the person's number he's looking for. But if it makes your day to use me as a punching bag, swing away. It's cool, I'm a big boy. Just trying to learn.

ok, maybe my sarcasm was a little over the top, but I was literally being as helpful as I could be without doing your research for you. I found the exact answer to your question mysefl by consulting Larrin's excellent resources when I bought my first piece of AEB-L because I needed to learn how to heat treat it properly.
Yeah, it took a little time to read through everything... but that's research!
I'm not 'punching' you here. I was legitimately trying to point you in the right direction, and for that you said I wasn't being helpful. I found that to be mildly frustrating. When I get frustrated, I get snarky. It's a character flaw, I admit it
