I am going to be making a camp knife for a freind. Thinking about going with AEBL .110 inche thick. To make a camp knife about 210 mm long(blade) 2 inches wide and full tang. Would .110 be too thin? Also any opinions on what Rk would be optimal?

Aldo has .195" and .165" in stock now if you are wanting to use AEB-L and decide to use thicker stock. My opinion would be to use thicker material than .110" for a knife such as that. The grind you are going to put on it along with what you think the knife will be subjected to are other factors that should be considered.

Light camp work, no batoning at most cuting down saplings. My thinking was that I could make a knife that would be great for food prep and be able handle anything a machete could. I want to a saber grind with the bevel being 3/4 of the blade. I have made a lot of bowies in the past all 1/4 inch thick and when I used them I never felt I needed the extra thickness.

Theo,
What lenght of blade do you have in mine for that thickness? I make Chef/Culinary in that thickness out of AEB-L but whacking at saplings changes the equation a bit,:) What steel did you use for the 1/4" thick Bowies?

I was thinking 8 inches, for the 1/4 Bowies I Used 5160.

This one is CPM 3v .110 thick 61-62 done by peters. Its 8 inches long(blade) single bevel and .015 behind the edge. I chopped through a 2x4 no problem:) I want to make my friend a camp knife that he would use more than just a couple times a year. So I though it could make it so it would work well in the kitchen as well. If not .110 what thickness would you guys think would work well?
