AEBL VS NITRO V

given what I've read here, it seems to me that Nitro V is merely a marketing gimmick- a practically meaningless rebrand of something that has existed for years...why does this alloy exist, apart from stimulating interest and sales via a new name and virtually insignificant composition change?

or am I out to lunch?

Lorien Lorien I feel the same way. I just compared cost and why woukd I pay 80 percent more for NitroV over 14C28N. Following is sarcasm, I know why it is because the 0.076 percent addition of vanadium is going to make the difference between a budget steel and a super steel. ;)

Nitro-V was developed to be an alternative material to AEB-L. They changed the composition just enough so that it wasn’t AEB-L. AEB-L is such a beautifully simple steel it’s not meant to be complicated. One of the best cutlery steels ever developed.

We are spoiled these days with lots of options. I can remember a time when there were very few steels available for knife makers.

Honestly the same can be said for just about any testing done, at what point is a sample size too small to be considered 100% valid. Unless we test hundreds or thousands of samples there will always be variability from a small sample size.

There actually is a way to calculate the sample size needed, given what difference you aim to detect and the probability you are willing to accept that your results only occurred by chance.

Also, I do enjoy the kind of testing you did and I have done it too.

Curious as to why they would change it at all? Was there a shortage of AEB-L at one point? Many sell other steel rebranded as AEB-L, why come up with a whole new name?
