Aesthetically Ugly, Functionally Exquisite How'd That Happen?

Although some Spyderco knives may be ugly, myself personally, I find the Military to be a downright awesome looking knife. Not only does it look good, it feels good, and no matter what steel the blade is made of, they all cut well.

The Police is another I never considered ugly. A Police as the first Spydie I owned, back in the early 90's. First "tactical knife" I ever owned as well. First knife with a blade longer than two inches or so. First knife to really ever bite me good as well. OOPS! ;-)

I've been carrying/using my Chowke for a few days. Every time I use it, I like it more!

The coffin style handle is so ergonomic and with the thin blade it's an awesome slicer!! I can get it

scary sharp with the extra fine rods of my SM.

Growing up with exclusively traditional knives, I didn't even get my first one hand opener till in my 20s, and I remember even then seeing Spyderco in magazines and in stores thinking they were fugly plastic things that were a fad for the wannabe mountain climber types and would never give them more than a 2 second look.

Well I've been around the block now with all kinds of knives at all price points, and nothing works better for me than a Spydie. I think the large satin blades like on the Military are gorgeous, and no knives I have feel better in hand nor cut better. And Sal does two things I really appreciate. He makes knives for the hand, not for the eye, and he designs the knife starting with the edge.

I read posts all the time from people saying like with CRK, "well you just don't understand until you 'get it'." I disagree with that attitude, and it comes off as elitist, but I will say that sometimes one just has to try out a Spyderco to "get it" rather than judging by appearance. Once one gets it in hand and cuts with it, the aesthetic concerns go out the window.

I hear the comment "we design in the dark" uttered by the Spyderco research and development team quite often. Some of them literally do work in the dark (easier to see a computer screen).:D

For me the Delica was my gateway drug. I had a Spyderco back in the 80's and did not like it. After fooling around with a few makes, I settled on Benchmade. Good knives. But, Benchmade is so sold on that ridiculous blade to handle ratio many do not fit my hand very well. Then, one day I got tired of it and bought a Delica. Wow! It fit my hand like it was made for it. I was hooked.

I happen to think most of Spyderco's knives are aesthetically beautiful, and to me the round hole only adds to that beauty. In my eyes, they get ugly only when a large and unsightly hump exists for the sole purpose of accommodating the round hole, like we see in the Valotton (which is otherwise gorgeous), Jot Singh Khalsa and the new Tighe Stick. I'm not too bothered by this, since there are lots of other lovely Spydercos to get!

I am sure that I would love even the knives mentioned were I to have them in hand. I've had only good experiences using Spyderco products and I expect every Spyderco knife to be designed with ergonomics and cutting efficiency in mind.
