AFCK problems

General, I feel your pain. I guess I've been pretty lucky, since I'm still very much a Benchmade fan. My full-size AFCK had one of the screws (handle) fall out. Mine is an older one and came with the allen head screws. I called BM and less than a week later, they sent me a set of the newer torx screws (also sent me new screws for the pivot and clip).
I own five of their folders and a Nimravus, and this has been the only problem with any of them.
Good luck.
I used their 1-800 number which I have not seen mentioned here. It is 1-800-800-7427.
At least you get to talk to a real person.

I must be really lucky or something, I probably had purchased 20 plus BM knives and have never had a problem with one. A couple have been a little tight for my likeing but I can fix those. As far as dealing with the company about two months ago I bought a 975sbt as a user from someone here on the forums and lost a handle screw, called BM and 5 days later they sent me 5 at no charge. Best service I have had from anyone on any product I have ever bought.

Angie at the repair department is extremely nice. She's mailed me extra pocket clip screws and stuff before, and when I mailed in my 910 for repair work (rattling noises from the stop pin and uneven thumb ramp grind), it came back 100% fixed, though it started to rattle again shortly. I assume this is a design flaw with the newer Strykers (rattling rear stop pin). Sadly, I think I have had enough of BM's poor quality control and will not buy any more BM's unless I am able to inspect in person.

I e-mailed BM several months ago, in fact it was around Christmas! Hardly a long wait? How much time does it take?

Thanks for the current address I deleted my previous post (it was a LONG time ago!)

Oh yes! Thanks for the advice and not accusing me of ranting, I really do think it is unfair that this happened if it was a one off, them maybe? Well it seemingly is not

! I will e-mail them again and let you all know what happens!

Your experience is very similar to mine. When the "shake up" occured, I saw quality control fall.
I guess I did not hear of this. What was the "Shake up" at Benchmade?

My AFCK M2 combo edge has hade some problems.
The blade come with a section of BT2 worn away. The knife blade rubs against
the liner near the tip. I have put a CRKT pivot spacer into the knife. This
helped. I have stripped the blade and bent the liners away from the point of
rubbing. The blade wobbles laterally when locked open. Is this normal? Yes I
have adjusted the pivot tension somewhat. Was this knife supposed to come
with a pivot washer? Overall a nice knife, but disappointing for little
things! BTW Benchmade, the Torx screws on the scales are very poor big
time!
I have had to use CRKT screws to replace one that has lost its shape. I did
ask for replacements, but no response to my e-mail. I live in the UK and do
not want to send this back

I bought this knife several months ago. I e-mailed about my problems then,
no response. The knife came with NO WASHERS. Period. The knife still wobbles
and is still not right. I live in the UK and it is a bit much to ask me to
send it back. The knife was bought from the States as dealers that sell BM
knives are unheard of in my area. I know I have modified the knife, before
this it was terrible, I did this in desperation after there was no response.
I am told the AFCK is well known for terrible quality control. What more can
I say? I am very disappointed.

Wayne,
The only way to get the knife fixed is to send it in for us to repair. As
for the AFCK being known for bad quality control this is the first time I
have heard of that and I have been repairing knives here for four years now.
The knife comes with two washers in the pivot area one on each side. The
blade wobbling in the lateral directions is probably from the liners being
adjusted, since one of them is the locking bar for the blade. It sounds to
me like you may not have gotten a new knife from your dealer. I do not have
any records of an e-mail from you before this one. If you would like the
knife to be repaired Please send it in.

Sorry, the blade had two plastic washers? Between the blade and liners yes
it does!. I am referring to the rubber washer that goes under the pivot
screw. I assumed there was supposed to be one in there! They are always
present in my other Liner lock blades. Perhaps a mix up in terms is partly
to blame. I did honestly ask for help a long time ago. It is not
economically viable to return the knife. Many have commented on the poor fit
of SOME AFCK`s from you, I did not intend to say they are all bad. A good
one must slip through the net once in a while! I accept that since I have
modified the knife (it is now 500% better than it was ) I have invalidated
the warranty. If you could send me some replacement screws for the scales
then that would be a fair compromise. I would love to send the knife back,
but I use this knife (the liner has never failed, even the spine slam test)
every day. I intended no rudeness but it is very frustrating. The knife was
BRAND NEW, I know what a second hand or even slightly used knife looks like.
The handle screws were unmarked etc.

General, I have an AFCK to send back, so thanks for gettying me going on it.

My trouble was that it tried to fall apart on me. The scews kept on falling out. The blade was not that great either. A real duff one.

My other BM's have been fine.

BM have grown as a company very fast. They have had some very large orders for the AFCK. This is why they have let the side down occationally. If you get a good one then its a fine knife and good value. A bad one is just bad luck.

I'm sending mine back, as you should. We will tell the forum how it goes.

Get rid of that rubber washer(o-ring). That rubber cushion makes it impossible to get a "solid" pivot tension adjustment. Try it again without the o-ring.

Thank you very much, I am impressed now that you have responded. I apologize
if I offended in any way. I appreciate your offer and will indeed send the
knife back. I will remove the washer fitted and the screw I added to it.
This is how I will return it to you. Is that ok? I have only sharpened the
knife twice using a sharpmaker at 20%. I am quite proficient. I will send it
recorded delivery of course. Thank you

W.A.

Wayne,
There is no washer that goes under the pivot screw. The blade should have
no wiggle in it at all. The minor adjustment that you have tried with
pushing the blade to one side should help. The stop pin screws can also be
used as an adjustment screw. It could be that you have a bent blade. I
will gladly get you some screws out we send them out every Friday morning.
I try my best to take care of every concern for our customers and sometimes
it is hard to do so when they are so far away. We can reimburse your
shipping charges if that would help you for shipping. When the knife comes
back into your country there should be no more charges on a knife just being
repaired. I know how much the knives mean in the everyday use and I can't
do much about the time for shipping other that getting it done the day I see
it come in. I can get it taken care of and out the next day, but that is
all I can due to speed up the turn around time. I will include the torx kit
for you at no charge and this will have all the bits we use to make the
knives. Next, time you have a problem please e-mail us back if you do not
get an answer in a few days. We are only here Monday through Friday and if
you e-mail us after hours on Friday we don't see it until Monday. Sorry to
be so long winded but hope this will help you out a little. Now you have my
direct e-mail address and can contact me directly.

Wow! I'm impressed. Way to go Angie! I think I won't give up on Benchmade just yet. Wish they would have sold me those spare axis bar caps though!

Angie is the best. Thank goodness she is in the warranty department; maybe she should also be running quality control!

Maybe she she be running the company; she obviously cares about customers.
