Affordable chopper options

Condor and Ontario have lots of options in that size at the price you're looking for.

This. The Ontario SP5 has a 10" blade, 1/4" thick, no recurve, and is only a whopping $50. It's an insane deal for that much knife. It's also FFG with a tall blade, so while it is strong, it's also a good slicer and well balanced.

The Becker Knife & Tool BK-9 (manufactured and sold from Ka-Bar) is what you are looking for.
You just missed their 50% off sale but they can be had a very reasonable prices considering their performance and warranty.

A most excellent knife but he's looking for 1/4" thick. That would be the much requested stretched BK2. I would love if @Ethan Becker ever saw fit to grace us with one of those.

There is but one correct answer to this question and that answer is Ontario SP10 Marine Raider.
Now i know nothing of the new version of the SP10 as mine is 1095 so my answwr is the 1095 version not the newer 1075 version.

For a chopper, 1075 should perform better over time simply because it has a higher chance of lasting longer. For chopping, the difference shouldn't be huge. They switched due to the amount of failures with 1095 for the given HT process they had. It wasn't bad but a few breakages makes things look bad and that series is designed to take a beating on a budget so the tougher 1075 was the evolution. There's a thread about it from last winter I think.

I was thinking most of the SP-series were 5160 but I guess that's not all of them. I know the SP-53 is just making it that much more suited to bashing against woody targets.
