Affordable diamond guiding systems ?

O oxig3nc

You've now asked the same question in three threads. No need to continue doing so. You will get replies. (In fact, I've already replied in an another.)

HI David,

I'm looking into buying my first sharpening system and I can't decide between Lansky Dimond and DMT Dia-Fold Magna Guide Kit. As I understand you had both and recommend the DMT Dia-Fold Magna Guide Kit?

I like DMT's hones better in their own right, used either with or without a guide. They finish cleaner than most any other diamond hone brands I've tried. And the Dia-Folds are pretty handy as well, for general freehand use. DMT's hones are also a bit larger in working surface area than the Lansky hones, which always helps in terms of working speed.

I decided to go with DMT, but now I have to decide between Aligner Kit and the Magna Guide. Any advice on that? I'm just concerned about how fix the magnets will hold the Dia-Folds, that's the reason I am inclining towards the Aligner Kit. Also isn't it more comfortable to hold and use the Aligner because of the shape of the handle?

That's up to you. Individual preference for certain ergonomics might sway a choice either way. The magnet is strong enough to keep a secure hold on the Dia-Fold. The Dia-Fold's handle affords a comfortable grip with the full hand, as opposed to a pinch-hold between the fingertips (Lansky & Aligner hones), which is fatiguing over a long sharpening session. And the working surface of the Dia-Fold's hone is also a little bit larger than with the dedicated Aligner hones. But having said all that, either system should work pretty well.

I recommend the Magna Guide with Dia-Folds. I have used both and prefer it to the Aligner.
