Affordable flashlight quality / longevity

I'm sure nitecore makes a quality product, but nothing I would buy.
They're just to futuristic and or tactical looking for me.
Then maybe Maglite? I bought another one of these too. The AA version, twist quickly for different modes, but twist slowly once & it's the same setting as before.

I have a number of maglites and find them perfectly adequate, they just don't really have anything in my size preference for carry these days.

I think the solitaire is an excellent size for a pocket light, but sadly there's really no good pocket clip solution.

I'm thinking about it and the brass AAA from massdrop is probably going to be the light for me if I don't just get a 2nd microstream USB.
I'll have to pay a little more from another vendor, but they're priced inline with the brass AAA maratac light lumintop also makes for Countycomm.

I really do love the microstream USB, but it doesn't quite have the intrigue of a very solid rugged feeling knurled brass or copper body does.
I say this as someone who's not really a light enthusiast as far as technical aspects, but of course I have preferences and do like a light that feels like a decent quality well made tool.

I agree with you that I mostly don't care about options. I want to light up dark stuff 🔦

I have a Maglite XL50. It's got a couple of modes: High; low; strobe. I had to go look to see if it had modes because I forgot. I always just click it on and click it off. For another $5 they make what looks like a robust pocket clip for it. I've ordered one (the clip), but probably won't get it until after Christmas. Takes 3 AAA. 1" diameter. 4.8" long. Good basic light I find handy enough to spring for the clip. Right at your $40 with the clip.

I thought about checking one out, but as a 3x AAA format they're too bulky to be a pocket light for me so I won't be buying one right away.
Definitely going to put one in one of my toolboxes though.

I know from the ML200 that their system is basically just on and off until you double tap or something and I can live with it.
I'd rather not have it but you can forget the modes are even there, I bought this light a month ago and I didn't even discover the other modes till a couple days later I don't think.

I still avoid lights with strobe even if there are ways I can live with it, yes I can live with it but I'm still going to stick to my guns in being picky and wanting no more than L-M-H or less modes if possible.

Well ya gots to stick to your principles my man :D

My Grandpa was a bank security guard. He had a 6D maglite with a 2D extension tube. When he passed I got it. It's not just a light, it's a friggin baton and practically a complete workout system for your arm- it's that heavy. I keep that by the bed. If it doesn't blind a thief it'll for sure light them up well enough to see center mass. We do have some cheapo lights from China that do the strobe and all that and take an 18650 rechargeable. They're okay and were cheap enough to get a few to keep around. I have one in the truck. The battery is what makes or breaks those, a cheap battery will wear out quick. They've been dropped and stuff and still work fine. Our outdoor security lighting is pretty extensive due to outbuildings so those are enough for us.

I decided to go with the massdrop AAA brass flashlight ( they're made by lumintop )
I'll be interested to see how I like the flush metal tail cap switch, how it feels...ect.

It has everything I like about the Maratac, minus that stupid metal loop, and it has the tail cap switch that is definitely more convenient not a requirement but appreciated for sure.

Too modern looking for my taste.
