Affordable small fixed blade for small survival kit

I'm putting together a survival kit for someone, and given the budget, I think around $30 is about the max to devote to the knife that goes into it.

I want something that is a dependable, tough, hard use knife, fixed blade, probably carbon steel, although I suppose that I would entertain stainless. Something easy to sharpen but can hold a decent edge. Blade length can be anything from about 2.5 inches to 5 inches, though I'm thinking given my criteria, getting something smaller is probably the way to go.

I'm thinking a becker necker ( bk 11 ).

Also, any recommendations on an affordable compact (though doesn't have to be tiny) carry stone/sharpener.

Izula is too much I think. The new becker coming out would be perfect, but not being able to have it for 2 months makes it not perfect. Seeing that Helle, I would lean towards the necker since I like the idea of some tough 1095 for a basic knife. Feel free to let me know if you think I am wrong.

What sort of steel are the Moras? I looked at some, but it didn't even say the steel.

Never heard anyone say teh Izula was too much. I'd say it is just about perfect.

It's about 20 dollars too much :P

I second the mora recommendation. Have a look at the model 511, that's my personal favorite.

There are also the usual suspects for the budget Izula-like knife recommendation: Becker Necker, Buck Paklite Skinner.

Get a Mora and a SAK...Depending on models you should be able to get both for about 30

The Mora's an excellent choice. It's inexpensive, yet does what it needs to do.

Agreed.

Word on the CRKT Ritter survival knife. Thats exactly what I was thinking when I opened this thread. Its nice and light and compact.

The sheath on the Ritter sucks, after taking the knife out several times the knife wont stay in if you hold it upside down.

I have one of the little Ritter knives in my pocket survival kit. It's small, and capable, but you arent going to be splitting wood with it.
