Affordable small fixed blade for small survival kit

Mora
Gerber Big Rock
Blackjack Blunt

If this is going to be the only knife in the kit dont do one too small...some CKRT/Neckers/Izula are a nice compliment but not a sole blade in a survival kit. If I were to carrier just one in a kit I would want it around 4+ inches. This is just my $0.02, I am i deck for a Necker or Izula

12 Dollars, the Buck Paklite Skinner. Made in the USA, and a REAL slicer. Very sophisticated looking blade, exceptionally clean... they took the design to an artistic level on this one. Not to mention the ergonomics are better than the BK-11, RC3 and just about every other small knife I can think of (other than the HEST.) Good working point and a whole lot of belly.

I would definetely save just an extra $15 and buy an Izula. This video right here made me a believer...

Where is this survival kit going to be used? Desert, mountains, tundra...or is it a throw in your pack, glove compartment kit or all of the above? I like the signifcant handles on the Moras, easier grip with wet, cold or injured hands. If you choose a skeleton frame knife, I suggest you do a cord wrap on it. Gives a better grip surface plus cord can be used for multitude of things in a survival situation. Just my two cents...no refunds. :)

Knife > Gerber Big Rock - 4.5 inch SS blade, full tang, lanyard hole pommel, decent blade stock thickness
Sharpener > Smith 2 step sharpener - quick and dirty field sharpening (not pretty)

Both can be had for less than $35 TOTAL - shipped to your front door (from Amazon)

Ok that was entertaining but 5+ minutes...put some bark on it...pine???...no chopping, no batoning, etc. I absolutely love the Izula but it would be my last pick as my only knife in a survival kit. But then again if the kit was small...and moreover all I got...I'll take it.

I don't know man, that was a significant amount of blade abuse, after which it still emerged shaving sharp. That's a lot better performance for the size and money than the majority of other things listed here. Do I think it's the bring all, end all of survival tools. Of course not. But if you have a small kit, as does he who's posting this thread, I'd say it's one of your much better options.

On pine...no bark, you could cut that same 4x4 with a utility knife. Trust me...I have done it just to see if I could (ok it was a 2x4...but still). It was easier than I thought. I was able to do it without breaking the blade in the utility knife. We did it more to see how good the stanley handle could hold the blade compared to a husky that the blade would fall out of. You can try it yourself. It might suprise you. Pine is soft and easy to cut. Take no offense but looks like that is a pine 4x4. I want to see that same test on a smaller diameter log with bark...ash or oak. Different story. I am just not a fan of tests on semi-finished lumber compared to logs. Once again Just my Opinion.

I'd like to see that test. And I'd like to see it compared to the other knives you mentioned. Then I'd like to see if they'll still effortlessly shave your arm.

You gotta check out Condor Tool & Knife ! I've got the Nessie model & it's sweet ! can't be beat for $25 ! You can get an Izula for 39.95 (knifeworks.com) and IMHO, sharpening stones are more of a luxury item when talking about small, light survival kits.

In other words, don't skimp on a blade to save money for a stone.

The smaller the kit the more skilled you need to be. Those micro knives don't tick any boxes for me. I would love a folding version of the Frost Mora in 3-4mm sandvik. Been meaning to do one myself but have no skills on making folders.

Mora in glove box, National Geographic Kershaw carbineer on the car's keys and a SAK in pocket are my first knives to present themselves in an emergency.

:D what about one of the new knife lines in Condor. Any of the bushcraft or the bush lore.:D

Good call...or the rodan...that looks like a tough beater...

Like all the mora ideas too

Like someone else said, with a SAK...nice package!

I too would like to see that test. And you can put my money on the Izula.

For $30 - KaBar BK11. BUT I'd go another $10 and get an Izula any day of the week.
