Here is what I believe to be an Afghani military kukri. This is like the one Craig showed a while back, but is complete with the frog and unique keeper strap. There is no provision for a karda or chakmak. One of the markings indicates it was made in 1894, but have no clue what the armoury mark is.

That's a keeper! I appreciate your taking the time to share some of the wonders of your collection with us. I've gotten the impression that it was fairly common for older khukuris not to have the accessories. Is this true?

Also, any insight you might have on historical use of the chakmak would be helpful. Johan and I have been trying to puzzle it out in the thread called Chakmak.

PS did is the worn spot at the bottom if the scabard have a chape, or is that wear?

Patrick,
Yes, there was a chape that was probably made of brass.

The chakmak has been used to hone the edge of the khukuri and to strike flint for sparking a fire of the tinder carried in the little pouch attached to the back.

Thanks John for another interesting photograph. What will you find for us next? Cheers!

An excellent comparison to Craig's Afghan. Many thanks for the good pic and info.
