Well I have ht 5 blades
1500 on analog gage.
Went straight to toaster oven.
475 for 1 hour.

They are straw ish color.
Best way to clean up decarb before grinding edge?
Thanks,Norsewolf

It depends on how thick you left your edge. You could go back to the grinder and clean it up that way. Or, some people only hand sand after heat treat.

If you use the grinder keep a bucket of water beside. Dip the blade in after every pass to keep the blade cool without ruining your temper.

There need to be two tempers of one hour each, with cooling to room temp between them.

Sand/grind the entire blade surface after HT to remove all decarb and scale. Then go up the grits top the desired finish.

You didn't say what the steel type was, but 475°F is a good temper for many knives. It gets Rc 59-60 in 1095 if the hardening was done right.

It is1095.
So I need a second temper before I clean
them up? Or clean after?
I ran a file across the handle on a couple of them and it did leave
Small scratches scratbut didn't dig in.
Is that a good or bad sign on the H/T ?
Thanks,Norsewolf
