After Sale Lounge

I always thought that connection speed, shortcuts and all that were what separated me from the fast guys,

I'm in France and at first I thought the round-trip delay between the computers will lower my chances to score in highly contested sales.
On the other hand of the equation I use a Linux laptop with an optimized Firefox profile and I have a gigabit fiber optic connection.
But none of this matters because, as you wrote, "luck of the refresh is the biggest factor" ;)

You don't close everything else on the computer when prepping for a sale?

I always thought that connection speed, shortcuts and all that were what separated me from the fast guys, but after somehow placing 3rd for the SS yesterday on my phone (not aware of any shortcuts on a phone), I think luck of the refresh is the biggest factor (obviously, you still need to be fast even with a good refresh).

All the times I've actually gotten decent placement, have been on my phone, sometimes, with abysmal connections by the roadside (i.e. I used Speedtest a few minutes before the hour to see what kind of speeds I was getting, and one of the previous times I placed well, I think I had something like a 1.6Mb DL and 0.7Mb UL).

I've had crappy placement far more often, and those times, it was because I needed multiple refresh attempts. Sometimes, being booted after waiting impatiently for 30+ seconds for the page to load because the old server was overwhelmed. With the last 2 sales, simply from being too slow.

Of course, Daverous may have the actual answer, seeing how he managed to be 1st TWICE yesterday.

Max, I think that it comes down to these three four factors, not necessarily in the order:

- luck of the refresh

- motor skills

- nerves

- download / upload speeds

The last one can be improved on by having better equipment, faster Internet, closing all other web browsers and windows, clearing the cache, setting the page loading to text only by eliminating photos but despite doing all this kinda wizardry, the other 3 factors would still give you better odds as you have found out. It may be that some of the fastest winners have gaming computers with super fast tracking ball mouses, I really dunno.

No, I don't close everything down because it's a work computer which is more important than clearing history, cache, etc... I have tried the phone a couple of times but it has been totally abysmal for me because my hands, eyes, brain coordination sucks and then I get too frazzled.

I am sure that Nathan gets a great grin on his face when reading this nonsense ;)

I won't say you're wrong, Mat. My odds seem to have increased recently when I finally finished building my new office and set up my computer. Its more than just hardware and connection speed, for sure, the luck factors in!

That is an awesome set up Dave! One regret which I have ever since migrating to Mac from PC many moons ago is the laggard bluetooth Mac mouse with far less abilities than those snazzy aftermarket PC mouses which are like supercharged! Good on you mang!

Congratulations on that score in the B/S/T. Lucky duck. It's beautiful.

I’ll strike out completely on the Friday races but I can get lucky once in a while browsing the forums and watching notifications. Thank you for the comment, this has it all in regards to what I like in a CPK. It’s my first from the EDC lineup too, never held one!

Nice snag for sure Jake! Since you haven’t had an EDC, some love it, some don’t. If you end up being a don’t, let me be the first to say I’d be happy to give it a new home! 😁

About a year or so ago I was playing around one night and was looking at the B/S/T thread and thought, I wonder what will happen if I refresh the page for a while. On the second refresh a gorgeous DEF, if I remember correctly, popped up for sale. It had beautiful Osage scales on it, and I think he was asking around $800 but I don't remember exactly. I couldn't afford to buy it and nearly cried when someone else jumped on it...:(

I’m afraid of Alyssa seeing it and wanting it. It’ll be hard to tell her no, but I’ll do that for you 🍻 😁

000Robert 000Robert , the refresh works man, I’ve tried it at random times also, especially in the Traditional section!

It's been a while since I participated in a sale, I forgot how one finds out if they got a spot. Email from Jo? Also today's sale was silly fast. I bet there are enough people entering messages at the exact same second that the processing layer has to arbitrarily decide the order (based on some other user data attribute, unless the DB records time down to the ten thousandths of seconds, which I double.

Yes, I will send out emails probably Monday.
