So I went ahead and finally bought a RAT-7 to be my new chopper. I'm already looking to alter things a little bit and would appreciate any links to sources of replacement or aftermarket grips.

Thanks,

Not a thing (That I know of - I haven't received it yet!) A guy I know does camo dipping and I thought I would try it on a kydex sheath and a pair of grips to see how it would look.

Never heard of any aftermarket scales for the Rat7.
Might have to send it to a custom maker or do it yourself.

Flix, I know you're looking for some aftermarket stuff, not to make them. But since I don;t think there are any already made aftermarket scales for the RATs, I'm fixin to tell you what I did last weekend.

I put some 'squite scales on my RAT-3. I had a nice chunk of mesquite sitting around the shop. I took the Micarta scales off, made a pattern on some posterboard, and transferred that to the mesquite, which I had already planed down to about 1/4".

I carved them out, drilled and countersunk the holes, taped the tang, bolted them on, filed them down, sanded 'em out, put some shellac on there, and finished with wax. They came out pretty good and a guy at work wants me to make some for him. If I had a decent camera, I'd post a pic for you.

StretchNM,

Curious what you used to drill the holes on your new hilt? I have a Benchmade Offsider (large knife) that came with some cheap rubber type hilt. I just bought some micarta off ebay, and figure I can use the jigsaw to cut the pieces to shape, and a dremmel to shape them. Would a normal home type drill work for the two holes, or did you use something a bit more specialized?
I figure I can get this working as long as I can get the drill holes to work. Of course, I also bought a back up set of micarta in case I screw it up, so I'm not completely confident on how to do this. :) Thanks.

Dave

They don't have to be aftermarket. I just thought if I was going to try dipping them, it might be better on some non-micarta grips. That way I could always revert to the original ones if I didin't like how they turned out.
