Did Cabelas ever offer the regular drop point or has it always been only the guthook model available? I just don't care that much for gut hooks.

Well, I think I'm going to try to make some scale for an Alpha. I think a real nice piece of ironwood would be the bomb on an Alpha. I thing the contouring will be another magnitude of difficulty vs inlays on 110. We'll see how it goes. I've got some smooth Buff that I'd like to try for this too.

I will be waiting for your pictures. I bought my third Alpha Hunter with the idea of changing the rubber scales and making wood ones. Are you going to use a liner or not? I was thinking a liner would be easier for the screws (large holes in the wood scales and small holes in the liner). I think that the contouring will be the work part.

Hi Gordon,

Your a man with very good taste in knives and ideas. I don't care for the look of the gut hook Alpha ether (I got a rubber gut hook folder for Xmas a few years ago). I'd love to see your work on some Alpha scales. Photos please of the whole proccess.

I did some also http://216.26.177.84/forums/showthread.php?t=535636

John,

Those scales are great looking. What's the wood?
Also, you mind discussing how you recessed the screw holes? Forstner bit? And did the the contouring?
And as far as me posting the process...makes it all the more fun.

Ed,

That's a good idea I think but that will require at least an additional 1/16th inch of depth on the screw hole. And then your all epoxy on the wood to the liner. That'll all require some additional thought but it would show liner all the way around the scale and that would look really good I think. Thanks for the idea.

Hi Gordon,

The wood is Bocote. For the details and lessons learned see post #9 in the link above the photo's. As far as the counter bore depth. I just set it so the top of the screws was no longer above the scale.

You all should note that the rubber handled Alpha folders are screwed to the liner. The wood Alpha handles are screwed to a threaded spacer. I'd suggest you remove the handles from you project knife before you start to see what you are working with. I made three handles all the same and the last one I was going to replace was a brown wood...it had the spacers so my counter bored scale did not work:(.

JB,

Apparently I'm not privy to the thread. It would let me in. You mind doing a copy paste into this thread?

I was able to hit the thread by logging in at the top right of the screen when it pops up.

Nice work John. Very nice.

I once dated a gal named Bocote...from the east side ;)

????? Not sure why the link is not working. Gordon, did you try what Goose & edbeau did? If it's still an issue I'll try to cut & paste.

John,

I got it finially. Forgot I changed my password and can't remember why I changed it. That type of thing seems to happen more to me than it used to.

Great write up on your scale project. I will be happy to use your lessons learned! I'll be taking my scale to width with the belt grinder. I'm leary of the table saw for little work. Glad you got all your digits still in proper working order. I'll keep you guys posted.

I think I'm going to start this project today. Earlier I replaced the rosewood with rubber scale on my 277 Alpha. Using those rosewood scales as a guide, it looks like the screw hole is 9/64ths and the recessed hole is slightly larger than 9/32nds...very nearly 5/16ths. So the search is on for a Forstner bit in 5/16ths. I probably just should buy a nice set of bits. More later today.

OK JB per your request to show as I go, this is the pilot project. I'm using African Wedge I got on one of those buy 4 sets of scale and 2 of 'em your not sure you want kind of deals. So if I screw it up I won't be pissed off like I was when I frigged up my really nice piece of ironwood a while back.

I haven't drilled the holes yet just the recessed area for the head of the screw. See the pencil lines? We'll see how I do with the contouring. I'm gonna go for an exact copy or as close as I can. I still have about 1/32 extra on the belly side just to work with. That why the point area near the finger groove looks a little rounded. More tomorrow.

Looking very good Gordon. I can't wait to see the finished scales.

Great job, the wood has a great grain. What are you using for finish on the wood?

It is very nice, for sure. I look forward to seeing your finished knife.

I tell you what, that gut hook zipped open my antelope like nobody's business.

I like the Rubberish scales but can't find any... I have the, I believe Rosewood on one and Elk Horn on the other but NO GutHooks...Thank Heavens!!!
